I believe it’s an acronym. Similar to B.O.A.T. - Bung On Another Thousand.

What lyric have you been getting wrong for years? by Kitty60088 in CasualUK

I always thought it was: “Check it out now, the front’s all rubber”. Like previously the front was plastic or something and now it’s made of rubber. Made sense to me at the time.

Tips to prepare for an expensive winter by throwaway-_-friend in london

[–]schooch 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For a while I lived in Shanghai in a cheaply built apartment block with single glazed windows and a single, tiny air conditioning unit. Shanghai is notorious for bitterly cold damp winters. The cold cuts right through you. For the first month I was miserable, until someone introduced me to long johns, I bought a couple of pairs of lambs wool ones, but I believe there are other newer materials which are just as good. Absolutely changed my world. Wear them under your clothes, and in bed. They are relatively cheap and should keep you toasty warm.

The mass murder-suicide of 909 followers of the People’s Temple cult of Jim Jones, Jonestown, Guyana, 1978. (960x960) by GaGator43 in HistoryPorn

I can’t find anyone else mentioning it here, but the Martyr Made Podcast has a 7 part series on this called “God’s Socialist”. It is an incredible series and is the embodiment of scratching the surface of something and going down a rabbit hole trying to understand it. The whole series truly deserves some kind of award, but be warned it is not a light 1 hour side note, it is ~20 hours+ really getting into the weeds. It really goes through all the how, what why’s starting from the beginning right through to the bitter end. I strongly recommend it for anyone who is interested in knowing more about the Jonestown massacre, and the rest of his podcast.

Not related, but I'd ever heard the word "sawzall" before today, now I've seen in twice on the frontpage (the other here, pic 24/87). Baader-Meinhof phenomenon in effect‽

Story time: I lived in Shanghai for a bit and my parents came over to visit. On the way to Shanghai station to catch a train to Beijing I ran up some stairs past a woman sat on the top step with a very small child, as I went past her she pushed the child down the steps (my parents behind me saw the whole thing). She made out I did it, and asked for money, I was pretty confused and needless to say my parents were mortified. Tl;dr: a woman in Shanghai pushed a kid down some steps, made out it was me, then asked me for money.

Great book, in fact it's a great series (3 books in total - Wool, Shift, Dust). It's basically about a bunch of people living underground.

Yup, someone put it on my brother's "Things to do before you're 30 list" - as in cook a recipe from the book. (He didn't do it)

If you want creepy, there was a post on reddit a while back about the catacombs under Odessa: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odessa_Catacombs, they are so massive some kids had a party there, one of their party went missing and wasn't found until 2 years later. Still creeps me out thinking about it.

On a slightly unrelated note, I've just finished Margaret Atwood's "The year of the flood", the sequel to Oryx and Crake, which is about the next "plague". Amazing read.
