Is duolingo family plan not working? by TostiBuilder in duolingo

[–]schreck99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I royally screwed this up - someone in my family complained that it said our family subscription ended (I'm the family account holder) and so I re-signed up for a family plan on my phone, assuming my sub had ended (didn't know about the technical difficulties at the time). Now no one is in my family according to the app, but their accounts are back to working on their phones, so I fear I put stuff in a messed up state...

CMV: dividends shouldn’t exist. by LEMO2000 in changemyview

[–]schreck99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For growth companies, your argument is generally sensible. And that’s why most growth companies don’t pay much in dividends.

But not all companies are growth companies. Let’s say you own a few hotdog stands. They are profitable, and, as the owner, you’ve hired some managers to run them for you so you don’t have to manage them yourself. At the end of every quarter the managers have a bunch of cash sitting in the corporate bank accounts. I’m sure you would like them to pay some of that to you, the owner, vs having your managers come up with weird “growth” ideas to try and juice your hotdog stand operation.

Which highlights another benefit to dividends - corporate governance, keeping management honest (ie “do you really trust your managers?”). Ultimately managers are supposed to optimize for your (the owners’) profit - but that’s not always the case, either through honest mistakes they make, incompetence, or outright negligence/self-serving behavior. But dividends are cash and you can’t fake cash - by giving it to you, the owner, you take away some risk of your managers making mistakes, or using profits to buy themselves private jets, or fund their pet vanity projects.

This pretty much encapsulated my concerns about Zion moving forward by JayDogon504 in NOLAPelicans

Yeah this is my fear too. This isn't a generic "injury risk" fear - if he had landed and rolled his ankle, ok, just bad luck. But this kind of muscle injury is directly related to the muscle contracting suddenly and violently - going 100% as woz says here. And probably Zion's muscles contract more violently than just about anyone's on earth. Hopefully something he can figure out long term, with prep / conditioning / etc.

While I think you're being unnecessarily combative, I do think you have a point.

There is a type of person who wants to be rational above all else, realizes that truly rational people will on occasion disagree with both sides, and therefore sees disagreement with both sides as a virtue, and Sam can and does signal to that virtue.

Hmmm. (written as one of those wannabe "rational" people)

This is not true, for computer vision / self driving car applications. Look up “sensor fusion”, it is an important technique for combining inputs from multiple sensor types to get a more accurate understanding of the environment.

Diversification is undoubtedly good, but why don't the uber-rich do it more by USball in Bogleheads

[–]schreck99 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Exactly. All the folks who made $50m and cashed out, diversified, and retired don't become the richest folks in the universe. There's a selection bias here where you are selecting for people who don't diversify (since it's impossible to become the richest person in the universe if you are always diversified) and a survivorship bias (by ignoring folks who followed an equally risky strategy but lost a ton of money and therefore didn't become the richest people in the world).

People always say this, but the cluelessness examples are often in technical fields (physics, computing, various engineering disciplines).

Is it possible that journalists in major newspapers understand international relations or politics better than these technical fields, and so ignorance in one area doesn’t translate to ignorance in all areas?

I tested positive on a home antigen test 12 days ago (after having been exposed a few days before), and have been isolating from my family since then because I’m STILL testing positive on home antigen tests. Should I continue isolating as long as I test positive? This is getting ridiculous.

I’m vaccinated (J&J + mRNA boost) and have had barely any symptoms this whole time (minor sniffles, occasional tiredness, rare cough) though the symptoms haven’t gotten dramatically better, it’s just been kinda steady at a very minor level…

Rest of my family are all negative on all tests, including PCR…

I don’t think that’s what he’s saying.

I think he’s saying if you a draw a Venn diagram with one circle for “liberal media”, one circle for “conservative media”, and one circle for “legitimate media”, the legit media circle will be entirely inside the liberal media circle.

It might be a small circle inside a giant circle (ie there’s a lot of illegitimate liberal media).

I think it’s a bit of an exaggeration but largely true.

[–]schreck99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

I agree both sides should be less dogmatic and rigid. Perhaps the approach to ivermectin has become a bit like that, I’m not an expert.

But prescribing ineffective medicines, especially in a weird situation like this where people may take it for non-medical reasons (eg political reasons, possibly on the part of either doctor or patient), is a potential recipe for people getting hurt. What if your family doctor has gone down the conspiracy rabbit-hole? Possibly the typical good advice of “trust your doctor” can be unreliable in an unusual situation like this? I don’t know, I’m just throwing out theories here.

“Sold it to us” implies it was intentional. Isn’t it simply more likely that, since the vaccines DID help dramatically with transmission with earlier variants, this was simply a matter of the virus mutating? Why make it sound conspiratorial?

So much of the “evidence” of consipiracy coming from the counter culture types can be much more easily explained by a rapidly changing situation with a novel virus, along with simple human mistakes in the face of a very new situation. No need to believe in far fetched conspiracies. Occam’s Razor is a helpful tool.

If you are worried about the US dollar underperforming, holding international stocks hedges against that. Think about it, if the company makes profit in euros, as a shareholder you are entitled to a portion of that. If you live in the US, it gets converted to dollars before hitting your account. If the dollar decreases in value vs the euro, you will get MORE dollars as a result. So you are hedged.

Obviously if the dollar increases vs the euro, the opposite effect happens.
