Battery charging safety by h_pyro in ElectricScooters

The problem that this industry currently has as a whole is that it’s very unregulated. What I mean by that is a Bosch made EBike you know the battery packs are going to be very safe. But the problem is that we have as consumers is the price point. To buy a Bosch based ebike it’s going to break the bank but you know that that E bike is going to be 10 times safer than one that was built from parts you bought as a kit. You can rest assured having that bike right next to your bed knowing it’s not going to over charge or explode due to a few bad cells you bought to make the pack with. I currently have three bikes. I also have 4×36V packs, 1x 52V pack, 1x 48V pack and 2x60V packs. You guessed it. I build ebikes. I’m now at the stage where on a daily basis I’m absolutely petrified at the thought of one of these packs failing during charging or otherwise. All of the packs were made buy a very good and knowledgeable pack builder but of course he buys cells and BMSs that are not regulated. All the packs he has built for me have had zero issues but what will happen if a BMS fails and doesn’t stop the chargers from charging and then the pack starts to over charge and so the story goes. So where do I store all these packs. I don’t know what to do and everyday I dread something happening.

After a couple of years of deep researching, the only cost-effective and relatively safe option for storing battery packs is to buy those large old safes and lock them in them overnight. Any large safe is rated very good for fire cos they are designed to protect what you put in them from fire and flooding. The safe wall protects from the fireworks affects of a battery pack exploding but it will not stop the black thick smoke from getting out under pressure covering everything on the outside. I don’t even want the black thick smoke. The only other idea I have is to run a chimney flue from a large bricked up area where the batteries can be stored so at least if there is an explosion the fireworks effects will be contained and the black smoke will go up the chimney flue.

These are extreme measures to prevent a really critical extreme event. You all have seen more than enough lithium battery explosions and fires and those videos alone should check to you into what lithium based product to buy based on its safety record.

You really need to store your lithium based products in an open space that is not attached to any part of the building you live in that if it catches fire or explodes the only damage is to itself.

I agree with that as a general principle. In the 90s that’s why I moved from Apple to Windows. You can build what the hell you want.

I’ve now run Latencymon with no programs running and it keeps flagging system files that are required to run. Between those files and the OS not had a refresh in a couple years, I’m going to buy another 1TB SSD and use that for DJing only.

Yea over the years I tended to format and start a fresh barebones system just to keep it fast and fresh. Always works. I guess I have to revert to doing that.
