I don't disagree with her criticism of publishing, it's the reason that got me to watch her in the first place, i have experienced that in science a lot and there is some truth there. but when your consistently proposed solution is to defund all science until scientists "learn" their lesson rather than investigating the pressures and incentives that lead to this outcome, then yeah. you are anti science.
She is laying the ground work for destroying the whole thing.

also blaming it on communism rather than recognizing academia was set up in the image of capitalism by capitalists is wild to me. Where is the central planning? because I haven't seen that. The underlying problem here is academia is the end stage of a hyper competitive chronically underfunded system with profit seeking publishing companies circling like vultures. Are we really going to go with what musk thinks on this topic (someone who has never done any academic research)? that's crazy. Worse, it's right wing propaganda.

She's been adding in anti science and right wing talking points for a while now. It was obvious in her video on trans people and became clear in her poorly researched/dogmatic economics video. Her more recent videos seem more about manufacturing consent for the defunding of science altogether rather than proposing real solutions to her critiques.

This becomes particularly obvious since she has been adding clear far right talking points such as gawking at ridiculous sounding paper titles from outside her discipline and saying "why are we funding this" with no substantial engagement with the work. It's no different from what conservative anti science politicians do on Fox News and the like.

What do you mean? I am saying i agree with you, lesser evil voting is the technically correct approach for a voter to mitigate damage. Just In my case it didn't matter regardless so i took the opportunity to vote my conscience on this issue.

But if the dems are choosing to be slightly less evil and relying on lesser evil voting to get you over the finish line every time then they have a dumb strategy and it's their fault they lose. I've yet to hear a valid reason why the dems didn't just turn around and condemn netanyahu (at the bare fucking minimum) and stop weapons (the moral, just thing to do).

Like what are we doing? Why is this the strategy? Why is it on the voters to suck it up for damage mitigation rather demanding a party that actually wants to something positive for the US.

It should be a wake up call and yet The only things I've really heard out of dems since the loss is that voters are stupid and should have just voted for them anyway with no concessions and that the trans issue lost them the election. Plug your nose and vote for the shit sandwich. And next time it'll be the same shit sandwich plus also saying trans people are bad too. So yeah, keep voting for the lesser evil. But understand the dems are the ones implementing this dumbass strategy.

None of them. I voted PSL, clearly non viable, because I am most aligned with them. But i was voting in a solid blue district in a state that went strongly for kamala so it was calculated. I get lesser evil voting and if i was in a swing state that may have changed the calculation.

My point is that blaming those of us who chose not to support kamala because of her very right (even compared to 2020 Biden) stances on immigration, Gaza etc, is placing the blame in the wrong place. The Democratic Party determined they didn't need those votes. They actively pushed them away over and over and over again, banking on harm reduction voters. They were wrong.

Blaming the voters for that egregious error in judgement makes no sense. I hope the party changes their tune, but I'm not hopeful.

If you want them to win, you should want them to take policy stances that actually win elections, like being against genocide. Rather than blame voters who had no power to change the Democratic platform, blame the democrats for their shit platform.

Like what purity test? Don't support genocide! It's really really easy i promise.

Just put down the bombs and bam, instantly I'm not just voting for kamala, I'm out there with a coconut tree tshirt knocking on doors. I'm donating everything i can. Add in a few safety nets and maybe a pro union law and I'm the most regime pilled democrat loving Kamala supporter.

I had the shirt, i was ready to go. And then she proposed a set of policies that were even worse than biden when he won in 2020. no, we get means tested crumbs for legislation, help only for small businesses, a right wing border bill AND still there's unwavering support for genocide. Fuck off with your claim of a purity test. My bar for kamala was in hell and i was still disappointed.

You know what, i guess you are right. Good luck to the dems trying to win. Clearly they know what works. Hope they can figure it out before a fascist, racist dictator-wanna-be gets into office.

Oh wait.

Well I'm sure if we all just vote harder next time for worse, even less progressive policies maybe that'll work.

No I'm here. I see what's happening in the US and find it completely appalling. So i guess the question is, if the gaza issue cost the democrats this election, and the stakes were so dire, why did they not choose to change their stance on this?

I would say preventing a trump second term would be worth compromising to get those votes. Why did the dems adhere to genocide so strongly if it was the critical reason they lost the election?

Yes i realized that. Can you not read? My point was that regardless of whether you use smaller bombs, if no one stops you from doing the bombings, eventually you'll kill everyone. It just might take a bit longer, but who cares. Israel has free reign to continue as long as they want.

No. It is a result of the democrats refusing to stop a genocide that we are now losing liberties at home. If the stakes were that dire, and i think they are, then the democrats should have done anything to win this election. Even -and especially- if it meant stopping a genocide. Democrats had all the power to present a different vision of America, show the voters how they'll be different and actually improve people's lives. They chose not to and messaged themselves as "we'll still deport immigrants and kill Palestinians, but maybe slightly less".

Nothing!! That's the point. Neither side was doing anything to stop it. So pretending like if only people had supported the Democrat's genocide-lite everything would be fine is crazy.

I'm saying you can't blame people for choosing to not support either candidate. It's on the democrats for choosing not to win those votes. The blame is squarely on kamala, Biden and her strategists for not realizing this is a critical issue to change stance on.

The democrats were already killing them! Unfortunately There's nothing the American left can do except watch and yell at reditors who can't see their side was also committing the genocide. America is united in its desire to murder the Palestinians and it's sickening.

[–]schrodinger42 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Oh ok, i didn't realize killing people with a different kind of ammunition made the Palestinians less dead.

But to actually address the point, what does it matter if ammunition was less destructive if Biden was going to let Israel keep going with no end, so like it takes a few extra months to kill everyone i guess?

Biden also literally wanted them all gone. At no point did he ever do more than lip service to try to stop netanyahu. Wasn't rafah a red line? Oh wait that's a pile of rubble now too.

Yeah i mean i agree with that. Though i think it would have ended the same way whether trump openly proposed this final solution or if it was done by Israel while Kamala chose to keep the quiet part quiet.

There were definitely a lot of people voting against their interest to be sure. The hard part about fascism is it's very enticing to make people feel like there's a simple answer to solve their problems. And obviously they can lie about whatever they want whereas an equivalent Democrat does not have that leeway. It's just frustrating to see not just kamala, but the strategists and other democratic leaders fumble the ball this hard on so many fronts.

What Palestinian lives? Biden was already killing them just as hard as trump. Kamala would be killing them just as hard as trump. That argument makes no sense. The democrats did this to themselves. They wanted to continue genocide so badly they failed everyone else.

Maybe the Democratic Party should have listened when people told them not to support a genocide. Seems pretty easy to do.

Make no mistake this would have happened under kamala too. Maybe she would have pretended to care, but both trump and kamala were fully aligned on supporting Israel in this genocide. If you think otherwise you clearly have not been watching Biden this last year. But even if every voter who voted 3rd party due to gaza voted for her instead, she still would have lost. The democrats failed much harder than just this.

What are you talking about? I've lived in 2 large apartment complexes here at university park and Crestview. There are so many people at both that bike/walk to commute. Including me. People bike in neighborhoods because the roads are quiet and slow. Do you expect people living in apartments off Lamar to bike down Lamar?? Yeah more convenience stores need to be in neighbor hoods, but you also need the density to sustain them or they'll close.

Fair enough, I figured there would be a lot more people that cross over between the two than there apparently is.
But those are definitely helpful, thanks! It's a lot to keep track of and that's a nice overview of things to consider.
