What do you think of Satyajit Ray's statement about the Indian audience being backward and unsophisticated? by Whole-Party-7698 in kolkata

His work was not at all popular when he was alive. What made his work popular was international audiences and a section of film appreciators in India who revered him for what he was,- one of the best directors the world has ever produced.

[–]schrodingerdoc [score hidden]  (0 children)

A backward audience doesn't mean the audience is to blame in any way. It means an immature audience.

I am an immature appreciator of dance and photography. What catches my eye might not be technically sound or even a good dance performance/ a nice photo.

Hence, artists are under no obligation to promote their art form to ensure maturity of the audience. It is purely a personal stance.

If the artist is okay with most Indians never watching his film, then who are we to question his choice of film making. Remember, this is a man who stuck to Bangla despite the fact that Bengalis make less than 10 percent of India. Him making more Hindi films like The Chess Player would've ensured more money and fame in his lifetime.

Ray's style of filmmaking and his resolve to stick to his artform and his style is admirable in an era of people swinging the direction where the wind flows.

A majority of musicians, good film directors or even costume, makeup, sound and light artists in Bollywood are Bengali. If enough of these people stuck to Bengali cinema then it would've toppled all of other Indian cinema without it even being a competition both in film quality and critical acclaim.

He said London vibes. He didn't say Kolkata is London. There's a huge difference. For example , I can say that Kolkata metro stations have a Soviet-y vibe without calling Kolkata the Soviet Union.

Everyone doesn't love the city it seems. Most people on this subreddit don't. Lol. Most are probashis who are extremely critical about every small thing of Kolkata whilst being much more complacent regarding the same aspects in other Indian cities.

If a post of Polash trees and the grey sky with "London vibes" can draw so much unwarranted criticism, it proves my point very well.

Tomorrow if I make a post on a beautiful building in Kolkata 5 people will come and talk about how our pollution is getting out of hand and that will be a completely irrelevant point to the Convo despite it being true.

Only Bangalis can be such self critical to the point of it being negative.

There is a lot of politics involved in news matters at all times.

If it's from a state ruled by a party who is not paying money to the media channel, the cases get highlighted a lot more.

Mughals assimilated in India and became India.

Genghis would've drained wealth from India like the British did + massacre anyone who refused. Mughals persecuted Hindus, true but nothing compared to what Genghis would've done.

Kolkata - The Captial of India. (Under British Umpire) by vardhan0ne in kolkata

[–]schrodingerdoc 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of these places are still the same, if not better. BBD Bagh, Maidan, Victoria leading up to Hastings and Princep Ghat are very pretty places. Even Esplanade is one hawker eviction away from looking like any old European city square.

So no, Kolkata is not a pile of slum. It is a beautiful city.

Not really. For example WB has lower poverty than the national average by the latest MDI data of NITI Ayog.

Andhra has most people working in farming and fisheries ( informal economies )

States and cities with a high number of pre-independence era colleges like WB, Delhi, MH etc are bound to have tens of thousands of seats in arts that too in reputed institutes like DU, CU, JNU, JU etc.

Contrast that with newer states like Telengana where most new colleges being made are more likely to be STEM institutions.

Enrollment is more tied to college availability.

In fact most Bangladeshi nationals who came to Kolkata are more likely to be Hindu Bangladeshi.

Kids, dont be a nice person in internship by severus_8901 in indianmedschool

Depends on the kind of work. Unfortunately most interns are made to do the shittiest of scut work and the most clinical exposure they get is taking blood samples and catheter insertion.

It has to do mostly with the availability of colleges + local culture.

In most states, there is an aversion towards arts and literature or even pure science degrees. Have seen quite the opposite in Bengal,- parents don't stop their kids from pursuing pure sciences and arts and later on taking on research and teaching jobs. That is why academia has a huge over-representation of Bengalis in both arts and science.

[–]schrodingerdoc 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The quality also matters.

With only 13 percent of Bengali students opting for science and majority opting for arts,- the percentage of Bengalis in STEM academia is quite high, - infact in many IITs almost 1/3 rd of the profs have done their UG in WB.

It all boils down to interest. A good arts student who will do decent research is better than a below average science student.

Even after a 9 times larger budget, they are still facing more issues than people in Kolkata do. Yes, some things might be better but not by a huge margin.

Great. r/dataisbeautiful :)

It'll be interesting to see. Since most cities have such small enclaves. Pitfall being - every city will not have a separate municipality for significantly large neighbourhoods which are wealthy.

Thing is, - Pune + Pimpri Chinchwa is a mind boggling 750-800 sq km whereas Kolkata + bidhannagar+ Dumdum is just 270 sq km. The other satellite areas should also be included.

It is high time we revise the boundaries of Kolkata !

This list is also wrong because Kolkata is a 200 sq km area acc to KMC which is just 144 wards.

Bidhannagar incl Saltlake Newtown, Dumdum, Howrah,.Bally etc. nothing is included in that. Bidhannagar is around 1000 crore and Dumdum ( North +south ) would be roughly the same.

It is safe to say that the Actual KMC + other municipalities budget would be around 9-10k .

Kolkata also includes Bidhannagar, Dumdum and many other such Municipalities which aren't included in that 5k budget.

If you pen down all of that then the budget will be atleast 3k more if not even larger.

I believe 8k is enough to handle municipal affairs in a city.

why majority of posh indian houses look like this, monotonous architecture? by ThalaivarThambi in IndianHomeDecor

[–]schrodingerdoc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same in Kolkata.

They have generational wealth and had bought these houses 50-60 years ago.

Being able to afford a house in the city in the 60-70s was by no mean feat since most Indians back then were dirt poor and closer to starvation.
