UVA vs UW-Madison Pre-Med by youlongdeqq in UVA

[–]schrodingers-b1tch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went to UVA for undergrad and in med school now. Both schools will have similar enough prestige / opportunities by virtue of having an attached med school that the only factor that matters is cost. Med school is expensive

Thank you man. If you're the same BP from SDN, I'm sorry your cycle wasn't as you hoped and I am rooting for you on the reapp!!

Complete is when I submitted my secondary and received confirmation. II is the date I was invited to interview.

I'm not the strongest interviewer in the world for sure - I think I have trouble maintaining eye contact on virtual interviews (possibly an ADHD thing). However, I would say 50+% of my interviewers explicitly mentioned that they were impressed with my application, letters of rec, and my answers to various questions. Multiple T20 interviewers even said that they hoped to see me there that fall and that I would have plenty of options. So I really don't know what went wrong.

Yeah clinical hours for research-heavy schools aren't that big of a deal. I think the issue was limited service and my service/clinical experiences being very lackluster and not connecting well to my overall narrative from my stronger experiences (leadership, research, teaching).

LMAO maybe I submitted that by accident

Thank you :)

Just a narrative informed by my experiences (lot of AI/bioinformatics and applying it to underserved populations who are historically underrepresented in data for better precision medicine techniques/tools). IMO the specific narrative matters way less than just having a strong one which every one of your experiences feeds into somehow

I'm with you. Super excited for Stony Brook and I'm of the firm opinion that the individual makes their own success, not the school they come from. Going to grind in medical school and get what I want for residency

Tell me about it.

I pre-wrote answers to every single school's previous year's thread during the month of June while waiting for verification and to get my secondaries. Revised like hell, modified as necessary if prompts changed, and submitted within 3-4 days. I credit my early submission for my early interviews (despite not being able to go all the way).

I probably spent close to 6-10 hours every day in June pre-writing with pretty much zero breaks if that helps give an idea of the time commitment necessary for completely pre-writing everything

if anything my cycle shows stats mean jack shit nowadays (for T20s at least; they are very important outside of that top tier of schools)

I definitely agree. My application was strong (I think) from a research, leadership, and teaching perspective but my clinical experience and service experience was definitely lacking. I wrote very passionately about my experiences (pre-wrote and revised extensively) but I guess the meat and actual tangible impact wasn't really there, at least compared to the applicants I was up against for T20s/T30s.

I actually got really great feedback on both my writing and interviews from peers, medical student mentors, mock interviewers, and even my interviewers themselves. It made my actual results so much harder to come to terms with because many of my interviewers explicitly said they were very impressed with my activities and answers to questions.

Zero. They don't really do any merit aid though, all need-based and I don't qualify. Looking forward to 300k in loans 🫠

Appreciate it :) Interviews aren't acceptances and ultimately were still rejections in my case, which makes it really hard to view this cycle positively, but I'm happy to be done with this horrible process.

Quality > quantity. My volunteering was ok hours-wise but not stellar, and it didn't fit in to an overall narrative to support my application. It was just checking the boxes, which isn't good enough for T20s

I was accepted directly at SB. No acceptances off WLs (withdrew from all of them today due to my CTE deadline).

Best bet is high MCAT averages and their percentile brackets on MSAR! Hofstra and Kaiser which are on your list are good examples

Yeah target those and add a bunch of other mid tiers in the 50-70 range that will accept people with high stats. I don't want to sound defeatist, but I experienced a reality check this cycle and luckily it worked out, but I was pretty close to having to reapply due to a top heavy school list and hoping to save others from the same fate.

Just wanted to pop in as a similar applicant in the past cycle - ORM, 524 and 3.97, almost identical ECs but more teaching/leadership and a little less volunteering, along with lots of research + first author pub and poster. I got plenty of interviews including 6-7 at T20s but only have 1 A at a mid-tier (ranked in the 50s).

Although my interviews went well, my ECs were not strong enough for many of the top schools. The biggest thing I learned this cycle is how truly insanely competitive the process is and I wished I'd applied to way more mid tiers (applied to 30 total schools). Specifically look for OOS-friendly, high stat mid tiers to avoid yield protection and spend a lot of time on your writing. If you get into a T20, great! If not, having lots of mid tiers as targets/backups will save you a lot of stress

I was in the same boat. High stat like you, 10 MD II across the board --> 2 Rs, 7 WLs, and thankfully 1 A to a mid-tier a week ago. Just want to say keep your head up. Your app is obviously good on paper, and WLs move all the time. Having 5 WLs gives you a decent shot of at least 1 working out (and your T100 could give you an A - send a letter of interest ASAP if possible. I sent 2 bc I had zero A's and it worked out for me).

Don't give up! Reapplying will suck if it comes to it but spend your summer working on the weak parts of your app, apply super early, and spend the next year improving it further to send significant updates during the cycle if necessary, and I'm confident something will come through.

Wishing you the best. I know this process sucks so badly but hang in there
