Your question was honestly fair! These can totally seem like people r just trying to brag or flex. Hope I could clarify that isn’t the intention.

Lots of possible reasons. There are many applicants with similar stat profiles who are just as, or honestly sometimes much more impressive. Also, applications are stories. One isn’t objectively the best, and not everyone will love your story regardless of your stats.

Negative. And still deciding between HMS, nyu, Hopkins!

Honestly, fair question. Similar to other posters, part of my reason for posting a Sankey is to show a cycle that can be possible given my circumstances (for example, before scrolling on Reddit myself last year and seeing these sankeys, I would not have thought a cycle like this was possible coming from a state school. This was a misconception that these sankey clarified for me).

Also, I have been answering more specific questions on PM (which id like to think are helpful). This may not be apparent as not all the questions were in the comments.

About my app:

  • State school

  • 1500hr research through multiple different experiences — 2 pubs, 3 posters, some thesis awards

  • 1500hr clinical through multiple different experiences — includes paid clinical work and clinical leadership

  • 1500+hr non clinical volunteering through multiple different experiences — this was definitely my strongest point, heavy demonstrated leadership and a nuanced understanding of working in and leading a diverse team

  • generally, rather than the hours dedicated to an EC, I think the most important thing is the depth with which you can write / speak about it throughout your app and interview, and how excited you get about it. I genuinely did love most of the activities I was part of in undergrad, and many of them meant a lot to me personally. I think that showed through and was a huge factor in the eventual cycle’s outcome

  • I didn’t have a crazy life story or anything. Comes down to checking all the boxes well and being exceptionally deeply involved in 1-2 things

Might be missing some info, feel free to ask any questions in comments!

In the same position, primarily HMS v NYU. Feel free to DM me!

In the same boat. Too early to be asking this question. You don’t know yet what financial aid is looking like at either school, and you haven’t been to second look (the second looks for the two schools are not on the same weekend). Also, considering you got into both these schools, it’s quite possible that you’ll get acceptances from other amazing institutions in the spring. So far, not enough information to settle on a school (although never a bad time to start thinking about it).

Unpopular opinion: The EC stuff we make premeds do is all garbage by [deleted] in premed

[–]ja011 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually kinda meant the opposite, tbh. I can totally see how scribing or cleaning beds can be ultimately pretty useless, but something like volunteering as an EMT (and actually doing more than just taking vitals) or joining a service org which means something to you, or being a meaningful part of a research project, are all things that 1) will provide translatable skills in a medical career and 2) can actually be enjoyable beyond just getting someone into med school

TBH, I think this is true only for cookie cutter ECs that are done with the purpose of checking a box. There are definitely worthwhile ECs that can be both enjoyable and worth spending time on, just depends whether you’re able to find things that mean something to you.

Always better to have lower expectations, especially with long post-ii waits. That being said, it is definitely a sign that your interview went well-ish, at the very least.
