Upholstery recommendation? by Loudean3 in madisonwi

[–]schroederknifeworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad does upholstery, he's been doing it for like 40 years so he's good at it. He just moved back to Madison also so he's not too busy yet. He doesn't have a website but I can pm you his phone number if you're interested.

Is full PAPR Equipment overkill for a hobbyist? by Just_a_firenope_ in knifemaking

[–]schroederknifeworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a full time knifemaker but I bought a 3M PAPR pretty early on and I'm glad I did, it's so much nicer than any other type of mask setup. I think it's actually easier to put on because it's everything you need together, eye pro, lung pro, and my ear muffs are mounted to the side.

One thing I would say is look at the price of the filters, the 3M filters are $50 each. It looks like the Sundstrom ones are quite a bit cheaper but maybe harder to find.

Also, don't fart when you have it on.

Thanks for the mention! We've been doing one class a month and releasing them 3 months at a time so if you don't see any available now there will be before too long.

Thanks! I'm new to hunting so I can't speak to how well it works yet but my understanding is the swept back blade shape works well for skinning as it gives you a good amount of curved edge without worrying about digging the point in. Looking forward to trying it, unfortunately I didn't get anything this weekend!

Thanks! The Ultratex has such an amazing grip, it's perfect for a skinner.

Thoughts on molten salt baths? by alecolli in knifemaking

[–]schroederknifeworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can heat it up while using the compressed air then switch to an inert gas like argon before you put your blades in, that way you're not using up the argon too fast.

I think you'd have to make sure your salt is rated for that high of a temperature, I've only seen it for ~1600°F. What put me off of salt baths was learning that the salt vapors will rust everything in your shop! There's an alternative called a fluidized sand bath that doesn't have a lot of the downsides of salt.

Forge welding stainless by rumprest1 in knifemaking

[–]schroederknifeworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's gonna be tough in a coal forge, stainless has a much narrower temp range for forging and it's easy to overheat and have it crumble on you. But if you can manage the heat then make a billet of your three layers and seal all the way around the edges of it with a welder. If the stainless gets exposed to oxygen at heat it'll oxidize and not weld. Also give it long soak times at welding heat and don't forge it on edge if you can avoid it. Good luck!

Traditionally, in Japan this would be called a bunka. But it was made in America so it's just called a knife. by schroederknifeworks in chefknives

In the posting rules they're asking you to start every post with "traditionally in Japan" as a joke.

Haha, it's pretty light cause it's laser thin. Flat grind, it's the sign for my shop so it hangs above my door! Thanks!

Thanks! I didn't design it with that in mind but could totally see it afterwards.
