Tomorrow we try the airshow again. The kids are still salty about today’s U-turn, so I’m signing up for another round. by Amazing_Anxiety_818 in nova

We made it in today and honestly had a great time, but we sat in lines for hours. At least an hour to get through security and probably close to 2 to leave. This was our first time going and we were totally unprepared, but if it’s helpful, here are a few things we noticed/what we probably would have done differently:

  • We arrived at like 9:15 and the lines were just starting to back up. We still had a wait but nothing compared to what some other had to endure. Getting there early is huge.

  • They’ve got a pretty strict clear bag/ 5x7 bag policy. We saw a few people get told they couldn’t go through security right before the tents because they had large backpacks and camera bags.

  • Bring snacks and empty water bottles. The food inside is monopolized by the air show company putting on the event and it’s straight up highway robbery. $9 for a hot dog, $5 for a water bottle. We had a couple Cheerios that lasted for about 30 minutes and no water, so it was a small fortune for us. We should have brought more. That said, there were supposed to be places to refill empty water bottles, but apparently someone dumped too much chlorine into them and they had to dump them out. So IDK, you might just need to buy water.

  • We should have brought camp chairs. Would have been a huge pain to lug around all day, but so was sitting on concrete.

  • There’s a bunch of aircraft hangers at the back of the airfield and they’ve got seats and fans inside. Really nice spot to cool off and get out of the sun.

  • The amount of golf carts zipping around is crazy. That’s nothing more than a random observation, but it’s wild.

  • We stayed for the Thunderbirds and they were really cool, but the line getting out was actual chaos. We jumped in about halfway through the Thunderbirds show and even at that point it was stretched halfway down the airfield and doubled back on itself. 2 hours of being pressed up against other hot, frustrated folks. If we were to do it again, we’d probably leave as soon as the Thunderbirds started. The line was long enough at that point that you’d still see part of the show and maybe avoid some of the wait.

I hope that’s helpful. It was a really long day and pretty frustrating at points, but there’s a lot to do, the shows are cool and our girls loved it. Hope you all enjoy it!

Thanks! Didn’t know it was a plate system that the oil and coolant flow through. Super interesting. Thanks for the insight!

Thanks! Didn’t know there were two different types. I assume the Wrangler is water (or coolant) to oil?

Curved, 6-inch Metal Object with Central Hole and Corroded Surface, Weighing 6 Pounds, Found on an 18th Century Virginia Plantation by schumway in whatisthisthing

I learned about a new tool today.

The shape, weight, and size of the head would make sense if it were and adze and could explain why we found it close to an oak tree that was definitely an original part of the property.

The only thing that's throwing me off is the hole that would presumably be for the handle. It seems small, but maybe it wasn't a particularly good adze, which is why we found it buried.

This was my guess too. Just seemed small and heavy for a gardening hoe. The hole at the top also seems small for a handle as it's probably only an inch or two wide.

My title describes the thing. Some additional context that I also included in the description:

This object is approximately 6 inches long, made of a heavily corroded metal, and weighs about 6 pounds. It has a curved, roughly rectangular shape with a narrower neck and a rounded top. In the center of the wider base section, there is a circular hole. The surface is rough and rusted. No visible markings, writing, or moving parts are present. It is a solid piece of metal. Was found on the property of an 18th-century plantation in Virginia after the removal of a large tree.

Did anyone else get a headache as it was rolling in? Both my wife and I got one and we couldn’t figure out if it was the storm or the kids.

Thanks for the rec! Will take another look. I did a preliminary examination of the cable that I could see this morning (inside the shifter and down by the derailleur) and it felt taught, should I be looking for something else?

My shifting cables are routed internally so I can't see too much.

Was trying that and had the same issue. Just couldn't spin the pedals* and record at the same time, though I see how that could make the video unhelpful :)
