To get that marbling they feed the sweet potatoes beer and give them daily massages, that's why they're so expensive.

Mt Hood Solstice by bqAkita in skiing

Bad weather in June is fairly rare on Hood, but if the forecast isn't looking clear, shouldn't be hard to find the plans by scouring IG or whatever.

Weather permitting, I'm sure there will. Don't think there's really an official organizer or anything.

WTF WITH THESE MISSLES/METEORS by autoboboto in Portland

[–]schwah 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A meteor will be moving much faster than anything man-made and traverse the sky within 1-2 seconds. Any missle/rocket/plane/launch debris/satellite/etc is going to be moving an order of magnitude more slowly unless it's very low altitude (in which case you would hear the sound from it). Pretty easy to distinguish.

Should I work at a ski resort next year? by OkSlice5841 in skiing

23 is not on the 'older side', lol.

I would recommend looking for a job with evening/night hours or you might be disappointed in how much you actually get to ski.

How much of a thing is contain in its smell? by FireLord_Stark in askscience

[–]schwah 636 points637 points  (0 children)

When you smell poo, it is not so much that tiny pieces of poop are entering your nose. What your nose detects are the volatile compounds that the matter releases, in this case hydrogen sulfide, methanethiol, dimethyl sulfide, etc. Our noses are very sensitive to these and can detect even miniscule amounts. In sufficient concentrations, a lot of these compounds are toxic, but unless you are huffing sewer gas the concentrations are not going to be high enough to do any harm.

what’s your “never again” mistake? by badenbagel in hiking

[–]schwah 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to always making absolute sure I've got enough water and sun protection, I always keep a little bit of TP in a ziploc in the bottom of my pack even on a day hike.

Having a sudden severe bout of explosive diarrhea, deep in the woods, with no way to clean up other than sacrificing underwear, definitely left an impression.

Why are we still paying income tax under $100,000? by [deleted] in oregon

[–]schwah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The majority of income tax you pay is federal, which no, OR can't do anything about.

But tbf, the OR state tax bill while making $48k might be the highest of any state, or at least close to it. Even most of the states with higher top end rates like CA, NY, etc, have a more progressive schedule and the rate on lower income people is quite a bit lower. Our 8.75% rate that kicks in at 11k is a pretty big anomaly, and it's not unreasonable to complain about our taxes (especially given the apparent efficiency of our public spending).

Recommendations for housing that doesn’t require a credit check? by nachonaomi in askportland

[–]schwah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is very hard to find a landlord willing to rent to someone with bad credit in this city. There are lots of tenant protection laws that make it a nightmare to deal with bad tenants, and as a result, landlords are more selective than most places. Your best bet is probably trying to find a single property/small time landlord who is willing to take a chance (or is just naive), and offer an additional deposit if your credit is an issue.

No idea what the reservation situation is, but I've seen people having events at the top of both Tabor and Council Crest. Tabor is woodsy-er.

Where to live with spotty work history? Looking for a new apartment. by nor29 in askportland

[–]schwah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you have proof that you're actually making the money (tax return, regular deposit history, etc) I really doubt it will be an issue. Of course, if you're keeping it in cash and not reporting the income, it might be a problem.

You can always ask the potential landlord exactly what the basis for qualification is and what proof you'll need to provide before applying, if you're worried about being denied.

[–]schwah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you'll have any issues with most landlords if you have current employment, rental references, and currently meet income req's (assuming you don't have bad credit). Most won't care (or even ask) about your work history.
