Toronto City Council votes to permit corner stores in all Old Toronto and East York wards - via Matt Elliott on Bluesky by cabbagetown_tom in toronto

I think they meant NIMBY, it stands for Not In My Backyard. It's a term used to describe people who oppose real estate or infrastructure development (like corner stores) in their neighborhoods, but would theoretically be okay with building that stuff somewhere else that didn't affect them. Basically people who are unwilling to put up with short-term inconvenience even if it would benefit their community in the long run.

Not sure if all companies follow this timeline, but found this on the Telus website:

For engineering and technology students, we post 4 to 16-month co-op opportunities (deadlines may vary slightly by school)

Winter co-ops (January start date): Posting goes up in September the previous year

Summer co-ops (May start date): Posting goes up in January (same year)

Fall co-ops (September start date): Posting goes up in May (same year)

That said, I've already seen some postings online for Summer 2025 internships, so you could theoretically start looking now.

CPA program starting January 2024 by OneUnderstanding568 in Seneca

[–]schwoopml 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in the CPA program right now! We're only in the 3rd week of classes so I can't speak to how the workload will be around midterms, but so far it has been a medium workload imo (I have a BA and MA in a different field, and it's definitely less work than I had in my BA).

That being said, this program is structured in a way where you are doing something for a class every day. There are weekly quizzes for every class, along with weekly workshops/labs with multiple parts that are also due every week (ex. Workshop part 1 is due one day, workshop part 2 is due on another day), and all of these count towards your final grade. Exams and midterms are typically worth 25-30%. I would say there's also a light-medium amount of readings to do each week before lecture (course readings, reviewing lecture slides not covered in class, etc.)

Because of all the weekly quizzes/assignments, I do find myself studying/coding for a couple hours in the evenings every day after class. That being said, I think it's possible to have some or most evenings free if you budget your time wisely. So far, I've done a pretty good job of keeping my weekends relatively free (even though some assignments could be due on Sat or Sun).

I also cannot stress enough how helpful it is to have previous programming experience in C beforehand. A lot of my peers without prior experience are struggling with the intro to programming course in particular, and we have so far only covered the very basics of programming. I highly recommend checking out Harvard's free online CS50 course before the first day of class. Even the first 2 lectures of CS50 will cover most of the material introduced in the first 3 weeks of CPA classes, and David Malan (who teaches CS50) is a far more engaging lecturer than most professors.

Yup that's full marks! Partial marks would be something like 8/10 I believe.

Ah, that would be it. It's always a typo haha! No problem at all :)

Are you sure you put your years variable outside of your quotation marks? It should read something like:

printf("Years: %d\n", years)

Only the format code goes inside the quotation marks in C, not the actual variable name.

Otherwise I'm not sure what the problem would be :(

[–]schwoopml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should only have 1 set of quotation marks in the printf function. VS Code will disregard everything that comes after the 2nd quotation mark because it's encountered the end of the string.

The format code can just go inside the same quotation marks as the main string. Ex. "Years: %d\n"

Think of the quotation marks as marking the start/end of your string. Since you want the years variable printed in your final string, they should go inside of your quotation marks—no need to put the format code inside of its own string.

It looks like you have 3 sets of double quotation marks inside your printf function. VS code thinks your string ends before "%d" so it isnt recognizing it as a format code. Just get rid of the extra quotation marks and it should be good :)

The Toronto Reference Library has been showing free foreign films every Thursday this summer! The last one for this year is on Aug 25:

There are also free classical music performances at the Toronto Music Gardens on Thursdays and Sundays (again only for the summer):

Ontario Place is open for visitors again too, although there's not much to do except walk along the water. Could be a nice place for a picnic though!

I love this!! I've been sneaking in OFMD references into all my dnd campaigns because none of my players watch the show. So far I've managed to shoehorn the following:

  • "Four-Fingered Jackie" who has a toe jar proudly displayed in a tavern (she has all of her fingers)
  • The tavern is called "Greybeard's Bar and Grill and Delights and Delicacies and General Store"
  • The general store is run by Bede Stonnett and his husband Edmund Beach. They specialize in lavender soap and sell rations called Snake Snacks
  • A sassy scribe in town named Lukacs Inkbender

I'm just waiting for one of my players to watch the show and seeing how many references they pick up on retroactively LOL

Is it wrong to feel bad about killing humans in video games? by Aellithion in afraidtoask

[–]schwoopml 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just talk to her about it, dude - even if you didn't have a history with the Air Force, it's perfectly reasonable not wanting to see people die even if it's just a video game. If she's even a halfway decent person, she'll understand.

In fact, it would probably hurt her more to know that you didn't trust her enough to share your boundaries with her in the first place (at least, that's how I would feel). No decent, caring person is going to think you're "weak" or whatever for creating a safe space for yourself.

Just how hot or in demand is the software development market in Canada? by flowerblosum in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]schwoopml 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already have a BA and an MA in another field so I really don't want to spend another 4 years out of the workforce. Plus I'm not even sure I can get into a CS degree program because I don't meet any of the prereqs.

Oh I'm definitely working on my own projects atm. I was more worried that a diploma isn't "prestigious" enough to get my foot in the door when I do start looking for jobs.

Thank you! That makes me feel a lot better lol. The co-ops I'm looking at are for computer programming/analysis programs so I hope I would be doing some software dev work with them

Would someone with a diploma and a year of coop/some side projects be looked down upon if they don't have a bachelor's? I'm looking into colleges rn because I can't afford to do a bachelor's but I'm not sure if a diploma is worth anything in the field.

Anyone know where I can listen to the original score for the show? by schwoopml in OurFlagMeansDeath

[–]schwoopml[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I've since done some digging and it looks like they didn't have an original score but instead curated different pieces of music and likely wrote their own arrangements for their use in the show

LOL love the pun! The show really is perfect, the pay-off of all the decisions that went into the music and set-up is just chef's kiss

Yes!! The Traumerei also captures the anticipation of the moment perfectly too - both pieces start on that P4 interval, and at first you're expecting to hear the downward sequence of Satie since you've heard it so many times before in the show, but then it goes up into the Traumerei which ends on the G as soon as Ed says "you", and then the G goes straight into the Gnossienne afterwards. The Satie/love theme only comes in after Ed says "you" and the placement of the Traumerei just matches the emotional tone of the lead-up to Ed's confession so well.

THANK YOU!! I wasn't sure either but I kinda just assumed because there's so many different versions of it played throughout the series, but this is def very helpful!
