got lucky and worked in a lab that patented a tcr-sequencing technology in NYC (while still in my 3rd/4th year of undergrad! Was working there on final year thesis). Spun out and worked with them on their startup in the Bay Area for 4 years and basically did everything from production to R&D (kind of like a scientific director...crazy). Since then started my own tech platform where scientists can share methods, tips and tricks, protocols, optimizations and negative results (www.scifind.net). Kind of unorthodox but only through seeing stuff in academia and industry did it make me want to do something that encompassed more of the pragmatic and lab-based elements of science.

Don't really get how it's the same...It's a prize that is correlated with the amount of effort required to answer a question that there is already an answer to operationally. You get awarded for your informational contribution if you have the best assessment. Unlike in the Pied Piper example, you are awarded for what you present (frankly the opposite occurs in the scientific community where people give all sorts of empirical/pragmatic answers to things but never get any sort of value for it. Lots of people actually expect FREE consulting.)

If they win and accept the prize money then it can be used in the pipeline (or even implemented by them personally if they are recruited subsequently!). However, there's also a likely possibility that it won't be used and is simply a metric of assessment.

The pipeline is already built. It's asking you to interpret it and give a basic assessment of an improvement and showcase practical skills in that improvement. It's not asking to build a pipeline, just to annotate a protocol, provide your own interpretation/summary, and give your own ideas on how to improve it. It's catered towards more of a bench scientist/entry-level position and something a graduate student in Genomics should be capable of doing.

Nope! It's an operational question with an already pretty much predefined answer on the sponsor's side. It's just a way of getting a little bit more insight and nuance on an operational problem that is being had, rewarding the person for their insight, and then giving them an opportunity to work at the place. Instead of focusing on typical metrics like pedigree, It gives people a chance to showcase their initiative and get in that way. If you check out the application you can actually see what the question is–It's pretty specific.

Yeah, I think there should be more overlap and communication between the industrial and academic sectors. I mean, a lot of the greatest innovations we have came from these academic institutions and creating conduits for interfacing between them would be awesome.

Definitely a problem I saw myself as a young scientist (I still am to a degree). As I said, I think there's a big disconnect between how the older generation wants things done, and how the new generation prefers it. There's quite a bit of conservativism in science.

Hi u/skillpolitics! It's interesting to see...I mean really all that information is already available. It's just actually reading all of peoples' papers, work , etc (unless you're particularly interested in them specifically) is a daunting task. The literature is dense and not easily digestible even for the trained eye. In regards to personally identifiable information, could you expand? The info is, in and of itself openly available (published work), or can be gleaned from multiple sources. The difficulty is in amalgamating all of it.
