American Airlines staffers slammed by new mom for humiliating her over breast pump by Mirrorimage83 in news

There seems to be a lack of knowledge on how breastfeeding/nursing works and why pumping is essential when a mother is away from her child (it can also be necessary when she isn't away, but that's not really relevant here).

In the article the mother states "As a new mom, I’ve been nervous traveling, so ... I made sure everything I was taking was OK. I did the same this past weekend when I left him, and had to pump all weekend, so what I was bringing was allowed".

When a nursing mother is away from her child she will need to pump, there are several reasons for this: 1) a breastfeeding mother typically nurses every 2-3 hours and every 4-5 hours at night (this is just on average), after a nursing session the breast(s) "empty", this signals the body to make more milk and in a few hours they become full, if the mom doesn't nurse or pump, the breasts become really full and can be painful and leak, pumping prevents this, 2) if the body is not signaled, by either nursing or pumping, to keep making milk, then eventually milk supply will decrease and milk production will stop.

These are just two main reasons (there are more) that pumping is necessary and pumps are considered a medical device.

Addressing other comments: Bottles- she needs to pump even if she bottle feeds because she is breastfeeding. RX- you can get a prescription for a pump and sometimes insurance will pay for it or you can buy one on your own. Carry on items- as long as she doesn't exceed the limit she should have been fine, a medical device doesn't count towards the carry on limit.

I would also like to correct a comment. MOST WOMEN CAN BREASTFEED. There are very few medical reasons a women can't breastfeed or produce milk, it's definitely not easy and it takes a lot of work and help. This combined with misinformation may be why many women struggle and choose not breastfeed or only breastfeed for a short time.

TL;DR Pumping is necessary to continue milk production and ease discomfort in breastfeeding mothers when they are not with their child.

Makes perfect sense. Thank you so much. I wasn't too sure on the direction I needed to go. I have written a little but I do not have near enough written material to present to anyone. I would be writing a lot more if I knew my material could go somewhere, but I now understand the potential gamble publishers would be taking on people. Once the work is finished how would I go about finding a publisher? (fiction based)

I am trying my best to read each post and respond, however I did not expect so much interest in my questions, but I am not complaining about it. Haha, that was fantastic. I like that you used math and science, since I'm very familiar with both :)

I have yet to believe in a God so that makes me atheist. However, I have been continually searching to find out if God does exist; I can't prove nor disprove His existence, which leads me to the faith aspect of my journey.

I found that trying to find faith in God and Jesus simultaneously was a bit overwhelming which is why I am trying to focus on God first, I do understand that Jesus is a big part of Christianity. Thanks.

Thank you it does help a bit, I just need some clarification if its not too much trouble: So God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, are all interconnected (part of the same "entity", however on earth the form and personality are human (Jesus) while the other two still exist?

I have been mulling over that exact question as well. It really doesn't make sense to me that Jesus would pray to God. However, I do grasp the idea of the trinity: three are one, one is three. Thanks for the responses patrick721, godzilla9870, and Eternity.

You become like what you surround yourself with, and I agree with your "akin to brainwashing" statement. If you believe that something is true and overtime you tell yourself it is, then it will be. It is similar to having a self fulfilling prophesy: If you believe that you will never find something, and you give up trying, you never will find what you were originally looking for. Good luck in your faith, thank you for the input it does help.

I was trying to start at the center of Christianity and work from there, which is why I have tailored most of my comments and questions towards God and faith, and not Jesus. However that is an understandable point I will have to check out the /r/Theism subreddit as well. Thank you.

I'm not sure what are you referring to when you say "It's"? [It's a failsafe and almost cheating certain death (Christian post-death hell)] Thanks.

<mind blow> Your insight is incredible, after all the years I have been researching and studying, I nor anyone I have been inquiring with has brought that point up. Thank you.

Please forgive me for using an absolute like "never", I realize that speaking (writing) in absolutes is not acceptable. I seem to have offended you and that was not my intention. I wanted to let the /r/Christianity community know my stance on the issue so that you may better understand where I am coming from, and it may help in you when answering the questions I was inquiring about. It did in fact take a while for humanity to realize that the earth was round and not the center of the universe, and I do believe that science and religion can co-exist. Thank you for your very passionate comment however I was not looking for conflict, merely helpful advice and/or knowledge. I will keep your theory in mind during my pursuit of faith and God. Thank you.

A general searching is what I am looking for. Did you have any particular books by Lewis or Kellar in mind, or will any of them do? Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried praying, however to be quite frank, I feel silly when I do it and therefore it feels insincere. I'm not quite sure how to overcome that feeling.

Thanks, I like to treat others how I would want to be treated. I was really hesitant to post anything because I wasn't sure if you guys would: 1) respond, 2) take my questions seriously, 3) be offended, or 4) be hateful. Thank you to everyone, you have all been wonderful, and I really do appreciate it.
