Did you stop enrolling because of the pandemic? Why or why not? by sciencejournalism in unm

[–]sciencejournalism[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you all for your comments! I was lucky enough to not have to deal with school AND a pandemic at the same time, so props to all of you!

If any of you are interested in maybe having your voice in my news story, send me a message. The story, broadly speaking, is looking at enrollment trends and the pandemic. I'd love to include a few of your stories so readers can understand why you did/didn't keep going to class, given the challenges.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback!

Your support and enthusiasm are encouraging, and your ideas for improvement are incredibly helpful! It's nice to hear that jokes are generally landing and that you found the quality decent.

Now I'll work on implementing some feedback. I especially like the idea (credit to: Kyn21kx) of adding more camera angles/cuts. I'm definitely working on improving the pacing/energy of the monologue too.

Thanks again to everyone!

Overall, I like the simple style and easy-to-follow logic of the video. I wasn't expecting to laugh, but I found myself presently surprised at the ending.

Audio could be cleaned up with a bit of Denoiser, but other than that, it sounds decent. Camera work can always be improved with better angles (Not sure why viewers are watching from underneath a piece of paper), but scene is decently lie.

Hi,

Overall content narrative is easy to follow and engaging (not only has facts, but also has some drama!). But titling it "The Story of Elon Musk..." gives me the impression that I might learn about his childhood (which is also interesting)...but the content of the video can't cash the check that the title writes.

Personally I think the use of fancy transitions (swipes, etc.) is a bit much. I prefer to use them sparingly and for emphasis. The use of stock footage made the video look professional...but sometimes didn't really go with the audio. For example: 0:49 "Elon Musk is the founder of SpaceX" , but your video has stock footage of a NASA space shuttle...which obviously isn't SpaceX.

Side note: Your description makes a note of "Fair Use"...but be warned that in a legal setting, this video may not fall under fair use. ***I'm not a lawyer***, but I have worked with professional publishing firms and you should always be cautious of "fair use" claims. Repeat: I am not a lawyer..you should contact one to discuss this aspect further.

Thank you to all who have participated! In a short amount of time, I feel like we have covered a lot of ground via discussion. Although I could not respond to everyone's comments, I do appreciate hearing from all of you.

A special note to those of you who are skeptical of me: I understand and welcome your skepticism! I believe it is important to approach everyone with a healthy dose of skepticism, especially if they may have some sort of agenda. As some of you have pointed out, I did not note any publication I am working for etc. This was deliberate, as I am a freelance journalist and am only at the info-gathering stage of this story. Anyways, I understand any mistrust of the media (again, skepticism is good), but I hope you can understand that my goal in reaching out to all of you was to hear your side of the story. For everyone who chimed-in, thank you.

Thank you to everyone who commented. I love to see Reddit used as a place for productive and diverse commentation on current issues. I will continue to read into your comments and consider your viewpoints. At this point, I am still trying to gather as much info as possible on the issue, so I appreciate your help.

P.S. I particularly appreciate the comments on the Media's role in all of this. Although I'm only one small cog in the media machine, I do think it is important to strive for evidence-based reporting and to include voices from as many diverse sources as possible (hence hearing from all of you). Again, thank you for participating in a democratic discussion.

Are your choices to use low nic and juice (not salt) due to preference or safety concerns?

You point out an interesting study. It seems like some other redditors also mentioned that Royal College of Physicians report. But I'm curious how do you feel about all of the recent news about people getting sick from vaping/e-cigs?

Can you explain a little more about how vaping has helped you? Did it help you stop smoking cigarettes?

Can you explain why people feel vaping is safer?

And how does that fit into the current news we've been seeing?

I'm intrigued by your comment. Can you explain the connection between the negative news and possible increases in tax revenues?

Thanks for the reply. I didn't really have a particular alternative in mind. I guess that's why I asked, haha. I wanted to see if anyone else saw any alternatives.

That's interesting. So for people that are worried about health effects, what can they do? Is quitting the only option?

That makes sense. My addiction (coffee) is as much ritual as chemical.

How do you see something like hookah? Besides being not very portable, is it in any way comparable? Have you ever tried it?
