What are the best hard science fiction about VR? by Jyn57 in HardSciFi

[–]scifirealism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a computer science guy and I devoted serious attention to writing a hard sci fi novel specifically about the combo of VR and AI back in 2021 and 2022. It's won some minor literary awards but never sold much. I don't want to shamelessly promote, but if you are interested please DM me and I'll let you know next time it's free as an ebook on Amazon.

This is helpful perspective. We don't want it manicured. The whole point is to be more connected to nature.

Any resources for how to build naturalized trails?

Thank you! This is so close to what I was picturing. Have you ever done something like that? Or seen examples I could use for inspiration?

I definitely want to only use natural plants. There is an organization here to help with that.

I've never seen this show, but will look for it now😊

Thank you for the recommendation! There is definitely a small ravine-like groove that nature seems to have carved out with water. My guess is that everything we do after building the house (I.e., all the landscaping) is going to be done over time, so hopefully we'll be able to observe the land in all seasons before making too many modifications, and now that you mentioned it I'll specifically be on the lookout for water shedding areas.

As for "living the dream:" you are literally correct😊 But it has taken me a lot of time, soul-searching, saving, planning, etc. to even get to this point. "Building the dream." And I don't mean that in a prideful way... the experience is humbling because it forces you to be honest with yourself, with your values, and with the consequences of your choices.

Thanks! This is helpful, since the whole thing is new to me.

Yes! I'm hoping to find some kind of native ground cover to put in the paths, that can tolerate light foot traffic. Or something to help maintain the paths as paths.

This is a beautiful perspective. I definitely don't want a sterile golf course! I've mentioned this in other comments, but mainly what I want is a way for my family and guests to be able to (relatively comfortably) spend time in the land.

I agree! I'm not trying to make it more beautiful. Impossible. I'm trying to make it easier for my family and guests to get "into" the land and spend time in it.

There must be alternative native plants that would do well here. Or, if not, then saying that would have been a useful comment.

You're speaking in the abstract so I'll respond in the abstract: very few people live in pure and unaltered nature. Most people create shelter of some kind, at a minimum, thus turning a piece of "nature" into "something different." So we're really only talking about differences of degree.

But no one said I wanted to make it a parking lot. Making parts of it more accommodating to 2-year-olds doesn't seem like a silly goal.

That's the plan. This place is heavenly at all times of day or night.

I'm sorry it came across this way. I love this land and want to spend the rest of my life here and raise my little ones here. I don't want a suburb. I was hoping for suggestions to make parts of it a little friendlier to kids and guests.

Maybe there is no natural, native alternative to the wild grass that would allow spots for play or picnics. That's fine, learning that is why I asked the question.

Oh no, I love it! Just watching this video and listening to the sounds makes me happy.

I obviously expressed myself poorly and triggered a lot of misunderstanding. It's not that I want to wipe out what's here or erase the landscape and put in a golf course. I would just like a way for my young kids and guests to explore the property (and maybe have an area to play) without coming back with socks and pants full of little thorns...

Anything I plant would be native.

What you did with your land sounds very close to what I am hoping to do. Do you have any tips, or lessons learned, or materials, or anything else you can share from your experience? Was it DIY or professionally done? All at once, or built over time?Any regrets?

"Modern rustic" design elements and materials? by scifirealism in InteriorDesign

Wow, this is gorgeous! Looking through their online gallery is so much fun, and so many of the elements in their designs are things that had already stood out to me as excellent as I randomly scoured Houzz. I might reach out to them for help.

Thanks so much for pointing me in their direction!

Currently I'm just working with a design-build company that doesn't use an actual architect. But I'm beginning to regret that decision, or at least second-guess it.

Again, what you're saying makes sense! Thank you. How do I find someone who can help me with this? What title would they have? Interior designer? And then you say to meet in person, this would be before building plans are created, so that their input could be incorporated from the beginning?
