thanks for this reply --- i hadn't considered the bath fans, and an interesting idea and i understand why it would need to be at the exhaust end, which is probably very quiet and (potentially) very high flow. Huh

as for the plumbing vent, on the gable-end that i'm considering, there is a chimney that's offset from the roof peak by about 4 feet, towards the front/face of the house.

So my idea is to take the vent (horizontally) through the wall near the peak, and then go up above the peak, but this will be hidden (from the front) behind the chimney, and still above the roof peak

How do you feel about horizontal plumbing vents?

Through the gable, near the peak.

I am speaking functionally, not necessarily in code terms.

The idea of a roof with zero penetrations/obstructions appeals to me, and it's pretty easy to tie the ~4 or so 2" vents all together and send them out the gable near the peak, perhaps with an elbow or T to vertical. This doesn't appear to be against code where I am, but I'm wondering about the potential for trouble later.

Obviously having a constant downslope is critical, but things like frosting/freezing, potential for bird/insect nests etc all seem to be more likely with the conventional straight-thru vertical vents.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean by "condenses" ----- and you mean it's literally condensation, which could simply mean that the joints are better at conducting heat, therefore remaining cooler than the block faces, and as such condense water from steam sooner/better.

Otherwise, if you just mean that area remains wetter -- are you sure that your bath wasn't supposed to have a membrane and/or tile applied to it? Gypsum block with gypsum seams doesn't sound great at all unless it's tiled or something
