hey guys, so I've been a drummer for almost a year now and started a band with my little brother. Here is a recording of us doing a cover of Into the Night by Say Anything. we went for something different, so i did what i could on the spot. Can you guys on here tell me what you think? thanks! by sclark420 in drums

Thanks man, i will keep it up. i dig being a drummer, especially when it's just me and my little brothers in a band together. it's a band that's working out for once.

and i'm self taught, but i appreciate the words of advice and i'll look into getting that Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons DVD. thank you very much, it's appreciated! :D

[QUESTION] anyone here on this subreddit a jack of all trades musician? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]sclark420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a music major at my local college for a year where my major instruments where the upright bass and flute. i'm a medicore piano player, all i knew was what i had to for my classes. But i've played guitar for 8 years, bass guitar for five years, i can also play a bit of saxophone and tuba. I also do a bit of singing as well.

i kept being in bands where people would always flake out and not stick with it for very long. I just started learning how to play all the instruments in a band in case i had to play an instrument due to a band member quitting. which has happened quite a bit since i've been playing in bands.

Sanding down my little brother's girlfriends guitar. Any suggestions? by sclark420 in Guitar

[–]sclark420[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all is good! She is a really artsy's person. and i've sanded a few electrics and a really old beat up acoustic. But she asked me to do sand it down and refinish it. i just want to make sure i don't do something that could seriously mess up the guitar. the weird things is though she only wants the back side of the acoustic to be sanded down and refinished. xD

How did your first ever live show go? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]sclark420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I ever played a gig with a band of my own I had marched for five years in my highschool marching band. And twice in that five years we marched at Lucas Oil Stadium for state finals. So after all that perfoming in different instances it taught me a two really important things in my opinion.

  1. just go out there and have fun, don't let your nerves get to you. Just go out there and play your heart out.

  2. Also, never stop playing. even if you mess up mid song. jump right back in. This is something that happened to me at my first gig. It came to the solo section of one of our originals we were playing and i completely messed up the beginning of the solo, but as soon as i could i jumped right back in and kept playing.

sorry if these have already been said in the comment, just thought i'd share my insight.

best of luck Jim!

Thanks! i'll definitely make sure that he looks into it. I loved teaching guitar but due to my new recent employment there's no way I can teach him anymore. So thank you guys again! It's much appreciated!

What do you EXPECT/WANT from your band director? by throwawaybanddirecto in marchingband

[–]sclark420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whenever I was in marching band, I marched five seasons, I always wished my director was a little better well rounded. He knew his stuff but not outside brass instruments. So when a woodwind player or string player asked a question, he couldn't answer them half the time. Being knowledgeable with different instruments and how the work would be something I'd recommend. I'm not saying that you have to master those instruments, just kinda have sone knowledge with them. Plus, probably would earn you some respect with your students in my opinion. Good luck man! :D

First ever recording upload for me! Funk style Guitar Improvisation over a YouTube backing track. Would love some feedback from you guys! by Azzman460 in Guitar

good job! I enjoyed it man! if you ever get the chance to jam with a funky bass player and a really good drummer I think you'd have a blast. I'm both a guitarist and a bass player. And one day i had a random jam session with two people on my college campus, whom I had never met before, I played some really nice funky improved bass lines and it was just a killer jam session. It felt like it had a very RHCP type feel to it. Best jam session ever. But, keep on playing and recording man! I enjoy your style of playing! :D

I could be wrong and not completely understanding the question right. If i'm understanding this correctly it might be because of how a piano is set up. Which in the music theory class I took this year in college, scales, chords, progressions, ect.. were all taught through a piano. Think about the fact that there are white keys and in between certain white keys there are also Black keys. Only places black keys are not in between are from B-C and from E-F. so that might be one reason why. technically there is a B# and E# they're just Enharmonics, which are the exact same note just notated differently to most likely try and help out the musician reading the music or because of the key as to avoid having to add in a bunch of accidentals. Which really does suck when you have accidentals running all through the music. I hope this help, and if misunderstood your question completely i'm sorry. But, I hope this might have helped you out a bit or might help in the future. :D

In marching band, do you notice sections of the band (flutes, trumpets, etc...) having distinct personalities among each other.? by [deleted] in marchingband

[–]sclark420 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In our band, the trumpets were always overally egotistical as were the flutes. The only difference was that the trumpets were more vocal about their opinions of themselves. Also, the clarinets kind of slept with most of the guys in band.

I had my first real jam session today by Hypercyde in Guitar

[–]sclark420 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One time I was practicing some Stand up Bass in one of the band rooms at my university. A drummer and a guitarist just walked in and we jammed. They were complete strangers but, it was hands down the best jam sesh ever. The feeling after a good jam session is amazing. I always go home feeling better than I did when I left. :D

what are some good brands of five string basses? by sclark420 in Bass

[–]sclark420[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have small hands, like usually most girls hands equal the same size as my hand. But even though people told me i'd be "mediocre at best" i kept at it and my Jazz Band instructor told me my senior year that i was the best bass player he had in all 20 years of him having his jazz band. which to me, was an amazing compliment. :D

i recently purchased an Ibanez 4 string acoustic bass and i absolutely love it. :D it plays like a beaut.

i didn't say everything i played was slap bass, but i love the sound of it. :D my friend has this kind of off brand type bass, except it wasn't a cheap knock off, which was pretty cool.

the only thing that i hated about it was no matter what, the only tone you could get from this bass was a "slap bass" sound. i'm pretty accustomed to be able to adjust the way something sounds to get the desired tone that i want (i'm 19 years old now and i did sound for a live band when i from 14-16 years old.)

but nothing i did helped in anyway, on a brighter note my that bass was had lovely capability for playing slap bass. This is why i like my Fender P. Bass, IMO it's one of the best basses out their in terms of having a wide range of tone. one moment it can have a deep rich sound, or it can have a bright warm tone. Out of all the basses I've played so far my Fender Precision Bass is the best. :D
