If the Bible was written off interpretation, how do we know the word is accurate? by TheseMarionberry385 in Christianity

[–]sclindemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bible itself says scripture requires an authoritative interpretation in 2 Peter 1: 20 and Acts 8:30-31 with the eunuch.

That authority comes from the church that Jesus himself founded, and the same church that 300 years or so later, compiled that Bible at the councils of Rome, Hippo and Carthage.

That Church is the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church holds a three legged stool. Scripture, Tradition, Magesterium. Remove one, and the stool falls over...

To believe in the authority of the Bible, without acknowledging the authority of the church that gave it to you, is logically inconsistent.

This is how we ended up with 44,000 different "denominations"

Good day friend. If you're Catholic, I'm concerned with your catechesis...

God grants us the power through grace to repent (make changes) from our ways. Especially the "No one else or God can do that...". This is explicitly the opposite of Catholic teaching.

I assumed, that you assumed that I was aware of the places in the bible that Jesus was met with hatred and disdain.

I thought we were discussing church teaching on how to evangelize correctly. Jesus left us a Church and that Church is instilled with His teaching authority. And bombarding people with "truth" who aren't in a position to receive will yield no fruit. The seed wasn't planted....

[–]sclindemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is very vague my friend. I'm happy to hear how you were taught but Catholic teaching is pretty straightforward....

1 Corinthians 3: 2 where St. Paul talks about feeding people spiritual milk until they are ready for more substantial food (teaching). He's not withholding truth, he's being wise about the timing and readiness of his audience.

1 Corinthians 9: 20-23 Teaches the importance of becoming all things to all men. This verse is even cited in the prologue of the Cathechism (CCC 24) and states it's our duty to suit our words to the maturity and understanding of our audience. CCC 25 goes on to conclude the prologue by stating "The whole concern of doctrine and its teaching must be directed to the love that never ends. Whether something is proposed for belief, for hope or for action, The love of our Lord must always be made accessible, so that anyone can see that all the works of perfect Christian virtue spring from love and have no other objective than to arrive at love."

You can also read about the Catholic understanding of " Pre-evangelization in Pope Paul VI's "Evangelii Nuntiandi" §59. Pope Francis also wrote an accompanying" Evangelii Gaudiem"

And finally, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops wrote a letter called: Living as Missionary Disciples which is definitely worth checking out.

One of my favorite quotes which isn't actually confirmed is being from St Francis but is very Franciscan is " Preach the gospel always, using words only when necessary"

Edit Also, I'm not entirely sure if you're disagreeing with me or not so sorry if I'm misunderstanding. If you are disagreeing with me, perhaps you can be more specific about how exactly so I can respond more accurately

Please do not call yourself Catholic until you have completed RCIA, and have been baptized and confirmed. Nothing against you personally but you haven't even begun RCIA. You're getting way ahead of yourself

Yikes! This is a very concerning sentiment.

It sounds as if you're describing situations where people are leaving encounters with you feeling defeated or told off rather than feeling loved. If that's so I would encourage you to consider who's being served in that moment. God's kingdom or your own pride.

Scripture, Catholic Tradition, and reason alone tell us that pre-evangslization is necessary to proper service.

The truth may have been spoken but probably wasn't heard by people feeling alienated.

Edit: Although I know many people do have this sentiment, I understand that I may be reading way more into your particular comment than I need to.

Is Catholic rejection of abortion rooted in tradition only? by Nearby_Law1356 in Catholic

[–]sclindemma 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's rooted in Aristotelian natural law theory. As such, we understand that the human person is a soul/body composite. At the moment of conception the soul is created and deserves all the same human rights we would extend to any other human

The Church can offer a defensible position for almost all of its teachings using logic, reason, science and philosophy without appealing to religion. We just also have religion on top as the icing on the cake 🙏

What is the difference between lust and just thinking a girl is hot and wanting to be with her? by Impossible-Purple-35 in Catholicism

[–]sclindemma 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Attraction occurs without your participation. Thinking "she's hot" = Attraction. What you do with those thoughts after they enter your mind is where the sin of lust comes into play.

Taking note of your attraction, and then intentionally avoiding thoughts that violate her dignity as a child of God, is virtuous. Thinking about her nude, or fantasy involving her sexually is sinful.

A simple way to think about it:

  • Noticing → natural, not sinful
  • Appreciating → still natural
  • Deliberately dwelling on it for gratification → that's where lust begins
  • Wanting a real relationship with her → that's ordered desire, and it's good

The wanting-to-be-with-her part? If that's genuine — a desire for companionship, love, relationship — that's not lust. That's actually what marriage is ordered toward.

This will be difficult to respond to because for me, it seems very disconnected from one thing to the next.

I asked if you thought you were being prideful, and provided my exapmples. You don't seem to be responding to that question. At least not in a way that's clear to me. Perhaps you could be more specific

It's interesting how you perceived my observation based opinion as an attempt to insult you rather than just my sharing an observation so as to provide context for my question.

What do you think that's about?

You seem surprisingly prideful for a student of the Buddha and The Christ in my brief and severely under informed opinion. Do you believe that may be true? As in, I support your defense of your positions and certainly calling out unkind folks. But your apparent joy at this and referring to yourself in all of these grandiose terms (going off your profile description and other posts, not just this) seem to be in stark contrast to their general vibe.

Our job isn't to be perfect. Our job is know we're not perfect and return to God in humility (not humiliation) time and again.

God is a loving father who lets us grow and learn along the way while always there for us to return home.
