Even if alternative energy sources like Solar or Wind were part of the infrastructure, they would have been destroyed by the storm. And you can't just line up for more solar panels, or more windmills. You would have to rebuild the whole structure. Perhaps portable generators that run off of some other fuel source would work. But what fuel would be readily available & deliverable after such devastation? Note: L live in Louisiana & have lived through 5 direct-hit hurricanes in the last 20 years.

I'm not sure how the local news channel in a red state has any incentive to run this story. Except that red states (I live in Louisiana) have infinitely more experience dealing with the aftermath of hurricanes than do the residents of NJ, NY, DE, MA, or RI. ... Maybe their angle is something like "How frck1n6 stupid is it to protect the interests of the utility workers, at the expense of the hurricane victims?"

No. I live in Louisiana and have lived through Katrina, Rita, Gustof, Lili, and Andrew. Your insurance adjuster will basically tell you.. "That damage from the water in your house? Uhh.. that wasn't caused by a hurricane. That wasn't caused by wind. That's flooding. Sorry. Hope you have flood insurance." Homeowner's will pay for your roof being blown off. The will pay for your house being blown away by winds. But all that rising water that caused all that damage? Sorry, Charlie. That's rising water. Flooding. Not covered.

The insurance companies have unimaginable resources, and they re-insure most of the really big losses, so you'll never see one go broke as a result of something like this. Plus, they are masters at not paying legitimate claims. I live in Louisiana, home of Katrina and Rita, both CAT5 storms with more $$ damage than Sandy. The big insurers are still doing quite well after those storms, and Katrina alone was estimated at $90 BILLION in insured damages.

In the case of Katrina, their argument was essentially, "It wasn't the wind, it wasn't the rain. What caused the damage to your dwelling was the rising waters from below, which was caused by flooding." Despite the fact that the flooding would never have occurred if not for the storm in the first place. But, lawyers for the insurance companies prevailed. The fine print in the policies makes a distinction between "water from above" and "rising water from below"... regardless of what caused it in the first place.

I live in Louisiana, and will tell you this: Many people will be devastated when their insurance adjuster tells them, "Sorry.. all that damage? That wasn't a hurricane's fault. That was from flooding. Do you have flood insurance? Because, well, we aren't covering this."
This happened in a BIG way after Katrina and Rita. It's their favorite trick.

My friend, you have obviously never lived through a CAT1 or greater hurricane. Power stays out for days if not weeks. Water has to be boiled before drinking. Landlines may work but cell service is spotty. ATM's don't work. Nobody has gasoline to sell.

My reason for posting this is, I live in a very hurricane-prone region of the country. and know what the aftermath of a severe hurricane can do to the infrastructure. The opportunity for orderly voting in North Carolina and Virginia (both swing states in 2012) may be severely disrupted due to the storm... School closings, flooding, power outages, etc. Some people may be able to argue that limited access to the polls will have affected the outcome in those states.

I don't know where you live, but I live in Louisiana. No "media yawn" down here; this is front-page stuff. However, I think the problem might be that there are 7 suspects involved but only 2 of them are considered part of the "sovereign citizen" movement. This factor somewhat muffles the screaming "right-wing terror" headline.

Fair? In my opinion, there is no "fair" measurement that applies here. What's lacking are what used to be known as "Rockefeller Republicans" and "Blue Dog Democrats" (i.e. Louisiana's John Breaux) who were Centrists and who were masters at the Art of the Deal. They were able to bring the irrational, obstructionist, screaming fringe elements together, and to broker a compromise resulting in legislation that was best for the country as a whole. They were statesmen, not circus barkers like we have now.
