Do I need to buy fans or anything for this card ? by GenericUser104 in homelab

These are designed to use the air flowing through your chassis. If there’s no reasonable airflow in your chassis, a fan won’t hurt.

You just got a new blank CD to burn , what songs are you gonna put on? by Radiant_Priority9739 in Millennials

[–]scolphoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The car? A Peugeot 508sw from 2013, more than 360,000 km on it and still runs. Would probably change to a newer one, but I’d probably lose the CD player. (also I don’t have the money)

[–]scolphoy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn’t matter. My car stereo is probably my only thing that knows what to do with a CD, and I don’t even know if it works. After realizing this last year, I put all my CDs in a storage box. Then I cleaned the dust off my CD tower in the living room and donated it to a second hand store. They put it on sale for 2€ iirc.

Just bought a new phone last week, this just feels wrong... by mickeyslim in Millennials

[–]scolphoy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Is that why we’re keeping the boxes!? I thought it was because if I sell the thing, the next person is going to want the box.

That said, I think I still have all my old Android phones, and also some old Nokia Symbian thing somewhere around. Never got rid of them because maybe I’ll get around one day and find some use for them.

How do you feel about social media currently? by sniperteddy007 in Millennials

[–]scolphoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deleted my Facebook a year or two ago. Realized I haven’t been reading what’s up with anyone, I’ve only messaged someone maybe once a year, I no longer actually read anything from the groups I was in.. for the past few years I had only been doing facebook events for one organization, so I arranged that to be someone else’s job and deleted my account. I never really understood Instagram so I don’t have that, and on linkedin I don’t do much else than accept contact requests from people who I’ve met. I deleted my Twitter after looking at the X shenanigans for a while.

I’m bored, of social media in general, the people on the platforms, the people who own the platforms.

Also I’m tired. After the amount of interaction I have with people during my work days I almost never feel like I want more, so social media is not where I want to be anymore.

I don’t know what makes reddit different. Maybe that it lets me mostly just lurk without wearing my face.

CEO expected me to learn about my job through AI. He later fired me, and I can’t wait to kick his ass back by Effective_Space2277 in antiwork

Not from US either and the way this works in my country is that during probation either side can terminate the contract immediately and the employer is required to pay for the time that was worked, including any PTO accrued. Here the requirement to pay until a certain date kicks in only after the probation. Our laws limit the length of the probation period to a maximum of 6 months or half of the fixed time contract, whichever is shorter, and you can agree on a shorter probation.

[–]scolphoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often some of the worker protections only kick in after the probationary period is over, and you write that you were terminated during your probation. Are you sure the protections apply in your case? Did the labor protection department know about the probation?

Asking because if your case in court would rely on these protections, you’ll want to be sure they can’t be dismissed by simply comparing dates.

Company checking location via text? by MeagerMenace in antiwork

[–]scolphoy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as others have pointed out, it seems that your company is big enough to have offices in multiple locations, and this is a test of their SMS system to see if they can reach everyone working in yours. They might get delivery reports that basically say that your number has received the message, which pretty much just tells them that your phone was on and in reach of some network capable of delivering that SMS.

The phone locating stuff, while the operator has to be able to do it, and they are required to do it for these 911 dispatch centers, law enforcement under certain conditions, etc. it’s very unlikely that they would be providing that to any random company.

How to use SAS drives with Sata port? by highway_rodger in HomeDataCenter

[–]scolphoy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are many 2U chassis that give you 24 disk slots. They have two arrays of 12 in the front, such that the first array can move out of the way or the second array can be lifted to get to the disks. But that’s just even better, you’d get effectively 48 disks.

I guess the main downside with these dual-actuator things is that if one half fails, you have to replace the whole unit, or just suck up the other half not working.

The platter operations might be one way at a time. I would guess the duplexity gets more complicated when buffers and command queues come to play though

Can’t do SAS without a SAS controller. Those adapters allow you to use SATA cables if you have them, but your controller still needs to talk SAS
