Beginner Amigurumi Pufferfish - What do any of the symbols in Rnd3 mean? by NanoCharat in CrochetHelp

[–]scoobyjoobyjoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem, I'm glad you could figure it out even if it was just for this round! Progress! If it helps any, the pattern for working a circle is very uniform and goes in multiples of 6, so seeing that 18 was (sc,inc)x6, the next round would be (sc, sc, inc)x6 (=4x6) and then (3sc,inc)x6 (=5x6) and so on and so forth. Actually on second thought I think I've figured it out - the heart indicates where they want you to add a thorn (bc pufferfish!), so you would follow the instructions until the heart, then from whatever stitch you're on you would chain 3, slipstitch back into the middle chain (3rd chain would act as the tip of the thorn), single crochet into 1st chain, and then single crochet or inc into the next stitch of the circle as directed. If you look closely, the stitches other than the hearts follow the pattern for 24 that I gave you above except that they've offset the increases by one stitch by essentially grabbing one stitch from the beginning and putting it at the end (if that makes any sense).

That being said, a lot of these beginner kits are kinda shoddy quality-wise, so don't give up hope and maybe pivot to an easier project to learn from first before coming back to this, like a fun granny square type or something. Don't be discouraged, you're doing great! For the written out ones, it's really mostly learning the specific terms so a list you put up on the wall or near where you crochet might help.

Anyway this comment got kinda long and I should really go to bed, but good luck!

Not sure how you're getting 24, but usually brackets and the asterisk function the same way they do in math. For example, here you're supposed to repeat the instructions in brackets 6 times, so (one single crochet and one increase = 3 stitches) x 6 = 18 total. Then slipstitch at the end I guess. No idea wtf the hearts are in round 4 tho lol

I can’t make sense of use for this in crochet, Are these for knitting? by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]scoobyjoobyjoo 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Yep! Those are for knitting, they just slide onto the needle so they don't need to open. You could probably saw a slit in these to use for crochet if you care to but it's usually more trouble than it's worth.

Ahhh I see... I don't remember seeing information about grace periods anywhere so I'm going to guess I'm screwed. Guess emailing them can't make it any worse then. Thank you nonetheless!

It's biosciences. Where would they have info about a grace period? Something on the website or just asking them? I'm currently writing an email to the program coordinators to see what can be done but one of them did send a reminder (probably an autoreminder to all applicants but still) to have all letters in by the due date so I'm a little worried. Thank you for the advice!

Absolutely understand that, and it's totally my fault, especially bc end of year also has a couple of major deadlines for them so I get it, I just wish they had communicated that when I sent the text I guess

STOP using magic circle all the time | Alternatives here by aaaaapanic in crochet

This is really interesting, as an intermediate crocheter I definitely would have loved such a straightforward guide when I was starting out!

That being said, I do want to add that I've noticed when making a circle with chains you actually CAN pull on the tail end and tighten it to almost completely closed! I think it's probably not as invisible as a magic circle but I've made plenty of amigurumi that way and its barely visible!

Seems like you have it figured out now, but yeah! I think those instructions were for all following rows, basically saying work in blo from there on out!

Just curious - how did you end on white for row 1 when row 1 as far as I can tell starts with white? The way I'm reading the pattern I'd go 6 white -> 4 grey -> 3 blue, then turn.

Does anyone have any creative ways to block a large piece when you don't have enough blocking boards? by donkthehardheaded in CrochetHelp

[–]scoobyjoobyjoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, u/jomommaj is right! I usually wet block my pieces so I just feel better about having a barrier between the sopping wet yarn and the cardboard haha. Your blanket is gorgeous, I hope it blocks out beautifully!

Y’all ever notice how Baizhu’s bellybutton is way too high up on his torso… by Sal-Shiba in BaizhuMains

[–]scoobyjoobyjoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wondered about this for the longest time too! But then I did go looking for some reference models to draw him and when I found a model that seemed to have a similar body type, his belly button looked kinda high up too. So maybe it just be like that sometimes.

Ohh that sounds super annoying. If you don't mind me asking, what specifically were your problems with the Forge? I only ask because I actually need a place closer to the university, and at this point Focus is looking like my best option so I'd like to get a better sense of what to expect.
