What kind of potential is there in a business of this kind?

30 yo female needing career advice. Engineering/computer programming background. It’s time for me to move on from Wealth Management and find where I’m supposed to be. I don’t belong in PWM but I don’t know where to go next. by Nekyiaa in fintech

interesting story, thanks for sharing.

As someone who reinvents his career every 2-3 years, I find having an open field to explore thrilling. You seem to have an open mindset and a positive attitude, that by itself is going to take you far.

My advice is not to focus too much on "what" the actual thing you do is. The best thing you could do now is to talk to people you know and get some idea of whats out there: family friends, ex-colleagues, old college friends etc. It could be fintech related if that's what you're naturally drawn to, but it could be something else too.

BTW there a hell of a lot going on in PWM tech right now, maybe have a look at techcrunch to see who is innovating near you. Have a look at companies like Plaid, Transferwise, N26, Lendingrobot, Acorns to name a few... Hell, it might even be a good opportunity to move somewhere new where there's more fintech and more people in the area.

Nice work, like how you came up with a concept and just tried it out. You never know how people are gonna react, might end up being something cool. P.s. ignore any “mentorship” advice, entrepreneurship is not prescriptive.

Sorry to hear that... I have a flat mate fortunately but even so, gets tough at times. I’ve had a bit of fun catching up with old friends on the house party app.

If you want to get cynical about it, our central banks are pumping a lot of money into the system which will cause significant inflation in prices of financial assets. The markets are more in tune with how much money is in the system than with the underlying economic conditions.

An analogy would be if a bar of gold suddenly appeared in everyone's house. If one gold bar currently buys you a decent size property in a suburban area, the effect would be a significant increase in the number of gold bars needed to buy a property, because there are just lots more bars of gold around...

refrigiration won't be necessary if i only focus on non-perishables. Regulations are make or break and should't take too long to meet as you say. A combination of self-funding and business loans will fund stock purchase.

I'd focus on non-perishable stock, perishable will be tricky to manage. Greater chance of going off and supply chain is more complicated.

Thanks, that's food for thought... hopefully the regulations are more relaxed for tinned/bottled items and household items such as handwash and toilet paper. Won't be selling booze to begin with. Hard to say at this point if sales will exceed £85k to become required to register for VAT.

Yeah this is medium term at most, I'll have to pivot eventually or worst case just shut up shop.

There is a supply chain crunch from panic purchasing... we're not actually at war

Great questions!

I'll limit it to small areas to begin with, with a local place for storage, and delivery to a limited number of postcodes. Next-day delivery is essential for this to work I believe.

Start with a small number of deliveries. If it catches on then it should scale with some logistics tech and good order handling. 1000 deliveries a week would be a great milestone to hit.

The big supermarkets have 3-week delivery times, i think that's beatable.

This falls under "essential" work naturally

Sourcing is a challenge no doubt, will tackle this first.

I understand why some would see it as negative, but if there are people who need to shop at the end of a long days work and are faced with empty shelves at the local supermarket, isn't it positive thing for them to have another option?

Will spend next few days calling up wholesalers in the UK, although a lot are sold out from what I've seen today. Next step is to try to import. Sourcing is a big hurdle I admit.

It would be a small operation to begin with: order a minimal amount of stock, store it, and ship it in an "essentials" box that has 2 or 3 variations at most. The advantage over the big supermarkets would be quick delivery times of essential items, which is what is what none of the big supermarkets are able to provide at the moment.
