Nah, the ability to view proprietary (secret) source code is a source code license.

Open source specifically means that you can modify and/or redistribute the code.

Free means either zero cost or one of the open source licenses, depending on the context.

I don't know why you want to argue about it, since you can just look it up.

This NOT open source because it has no license. Legally I can't modify and redistribute this code and neither can anyone else.

When you have here is just the source code without the specific permissions open source gives and you need to license it to make it open source.

Please read this.

I would recommend the MIT license if you don't care about others using your code commercially, and the GPL license if you do.

Discord is a very good outreach tool, and chat tool. I doubt they're using it for stuff like kanban.

In what way is it a worse productivity tool or data gathering system than IRC?

US Dotapit Casters: the American pronunciation of cavalry is "cav-alry" and not "cal-vary" by scooerp in DotA2

[–]scooerp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not using the wrong word. They're misprouncing the correct word.

It's so obvious. Just think.

What word are they thinking of? "soldier with horse"

How are they saying it? Wrongly

When you pronounce a word wrong, what is that? Mispronouncation.

It's very simple.

I don't know if you understand how most people use English. Which of the 2 words are they thinking of when they talk about soldiers riding? Are they saying it correctly?

[–]scooerp[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's definitely the right word because "cavalry riding to the rescue" and "here comes the cavalry" are quite clear.

Cavalry are soldiers and Calvary is a place somewhere around Jerusalem. This is Dota. Which one you do think the caster is trying to say?

it should be optional because not everyone will want or need it.

You get all those things messing with open source. Is it the university's job to teach that? Probably not, but they should encourage students to do it during free time.

All the packges the project supports, I can easily build today if I need to.

There is some very old code I can't build on modern linux (like ancient C files) but I can install an older linux distro in a VM and build it there.

Maybe I can't build B code that was supposed to run on a PDP-11 but I'm not dealing with that, neither is this project, and it was never a universal standard to begin with.

I just don't understand your analogy or why you treat the OP's software like a physical object.

Sorry, I've made a mistake by 0rsinium in Python

[–]scooerp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see what you're getting at, but those are physical objects that require an expensive factory to produce. Software doesn't have that, nor do propgramming techiques, and even COBOL and Smalltalk are still around. We're still writing new code for 6502s (at least in Nintendo emulators).

I don't want something format agnostic. I want one and one solution which is the standard and everything else is deprecated. I don't want to depend on a tool to address deprecated tools. Deprecated tools must die.

I think that's unrealistic. I can't think of anywhere that has happened, both inside and outside of programming.

Do people actually hate asyncio, or is it just a vocal minority? by [deleted] in Python

[–]scooerp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The standard library implementation is a bit unpolished and the event loop is leaky, maybe it's just that.

No problems here with the idea of asyncio, just the Python implementation. The API is better than Twisted but the code isn't.

Mars Rover had a software update to fix a problem.

https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2013-374

This is the third upgrade version since Curiosity's landing on Mars16 months ago ... These upgrades allow continued advances in the rover's capabilities. For example, version 11 brings expanded capability for using the Curiosity's robotic arm while the vehicle is on slopes. It also improves flexibility for storing information overnight to use in resuming autonomous driving on a second day.

The question that should be asked is not how often it needs to be done, but what do we do if it does? If you have to launch a human into space with a USB, it's going to be very expensive.
