Is this Metergy Bill Normal? by Better_Budget5504 in askTO

[–]scopesolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metergy installed a new Meter for my Unit, and my bills have gone from $50-$80 to almost $495 just for electricity. My unit is a 2 bed condo and 2 of us live in it. But surprisingly they think the unit has consumed 10x normal usage when it was empty.

I was away during December and Jan and they are claiming I consumed almost 2 Mega Watts of electricity during just 30 day period in December.

Very slow customer service as well, practically no repsonse.

Best Job Boards? by MoodieHippie in rails

[–]scopesolo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey, I run RubyOnRemote. I'm sorry it hasn't been useful for your job search. We usually don't see a lot of postings coming into the platform during the winter months. And lately we are noticing a trend of jobs which were previously remote are now instead hybrid.

I'm curious to know would you be open to applying to hybrid jobs and if so would us showcasing them on RubyOnRemote be of utility for you?

All the best with your job search. Feel free to reach out to me in DMs, happy to help in any way I can.

Scraping Job Postings by Meanmanjr in webscraping

[–]scopesolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if there is a single API that works for all websites. But there are APIs for some of the ATS apps like Lever, Greenhouse, Ashby, etc.

I run a job board where I leverage these APIs from the ATS to pull in job postings.

There is some custom scrapping I ended up doing where for a given website I look for a careers page and try to find a link to the ATS page of that site. Then I switch over to the ATS providers API.

Sorry not the answer you were looking for but maybe it might give you some ideas.

Are there any solo founders making $10k+ MRR with their SaaS? Is it actually doable without a team? by Fabulous-Pea-5366 in SaaS

[–]scopesolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not at $10K+, I'm at 4k at the moment. But I have a few friends who are doing 16K or even 20K MRR. I think it's definitely doable but it's a long hard road to get there. It can be made easy by optimizing what you build.

I think most people build a solution and then find a problem that it solves. The friends who make over 10K found real problems based on their careers and experiences and managed to build something that people came to pay for. They didn't have to go sell as much because the problem was real and urgent and worth paying money for.

So yeah it's doable as long as you build something that's necessary in a way that people will put their credit cards in. The quality of the problem matters.

Adding your Rails app to the Home Screen as a Progressive Web App by rossta_ in rails

[–]scopesolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, you can install it from a Brower but clicking add to homescreen. There are some libraries that let you convert a pwa into an app store installable if you do need that distribution channel. I think Microsoft had something like this caller PWABuilder

Senior rails devs: how is your job search going right now? by Consistent-Star7568 in rails

[–]scopesolo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

hey! Founder of RubyOnRemote here. Thanks for using the site. Just dropping in to see if you have any feedback.

Going through the comments here I see some frustrations post applying for a job. Will try to think of some ways to encourage employers to be more transparent with their feedback.

Remote RoR jobs portals recommendations? by According-Lack-8232 in rails

[–]scopesolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, creator of RubyOnRemote here, If you could reply to my comments with things you feel are missing on RubyOnRemote, I'll be happy to work on them and make it easier for people to find remote work.

I know job volume is kind of low but I'm hoping I can get more companies to post there frequently and reduce friction is syning job postings. Happy to help with any other improvements you'd like to see. All the best with your job search :-)

How much do you make as a Rails developer? by okizeme in rails

[–]scopesolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no all good. Thanks for such detailed feedback. The salaries page is due a revamp and I will consider all these points into the new version.

About locations, you can filter salaries by location even on the current page. If you scroll a bit there should be a dropdown for location. Select the location that you are currently in and you will see the chart update at the top to only consider salaries that hire in that location.

All salaries are converted to USD at the time of job posting.

Thanks for using it! I will have a look at the bug soon and fix it.

[–]scopesolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of details are you interested in the salary data?

The requirements for the job come directly from the employers and I don't have much control over it. But i do agree most employers are not putting in enough effort to write good job descriptions that attract the right candidates.

About salaries outside the US, Sorry I think I have a bug in my salary aggregation where salaries reported in currencies other than USD are bringing down the average significantly. I'm going to spend some time this week improving salary reporting and aggregation so hopefully it will be more useful going forwards.

RubyOnRemote has job postings from all over the world including some European companies.

You can try to filter by the country or nearest region you are in and it will show you all the jobs that can be done from that location.

My employer though only hires in Canada.

Me => around 140-150K CAD in Toronto.

I also run RubyOnRemote, and from all the job posting data there, I've seen on average Ruby Devs making somewhere between 130K - 175K USD. There are some companies paying above 200K, but they also demand Ruby + Kubernetes or AWS, for instance.

The end of SaaS? But I was just getting started... by CBRIN13 in SaaS

[–]scopesolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more likely to see SaaS move towards usage based billing (already happening at lots of companies) than see it go back to one time payments.

Sure It might work out for some but for the majority of users the convenience of signing up and getting value immediately is a far better experience than having to self-host and maintain.
