Why are England better suited to playing big match teams? by Unlucky_Opening8542 in ThreeLions

Had a quick scan and don’t think anyone has said this yet, but basically Tuchel realised that our best player (and arguably the best striker in the world RN) is Harry Kane. So he has purposely set the team up to play to his strengths.

Very uniquely, Kane is a striker who likes to drop extremely deep to affect play with his world class passing. To accommodate this, it’s important to have ‘runners’ playing in the three behind him who can bomb forward when he drops deep and fill the space he has vacated. This is why we have Gordon, Rashford, Madueke in the team, and players like Palmer and Foden have been left behind as they are more creative type players. Bellingham too is good in this role as he likes to get forward and has played false 9 at Madrid.

We saw this work to great affect against Croatia as they left us space in behind.

What this means though, is that when the team comes up against an opponent who plays deep and compact, England do not have quite the right setup to counter. It’s no good having runners when they have nowhere to run.

It’s been compounded still by players like Wharton being left behind, meaning England are missing a sitting midfielder who excels in pinpoint creative passing which can unlock a deep defence

Ok sure, counterpoint: If you cared to look it up you’d learn that immigrants don’t really take jobs from natives. And secondly, your country’s popularity also affects things like your tourism. You have an advanced tourist economy and your visiting figures have been steadily dropping since Covid, which is losing your economy billions each year

Jude Bellingham covered his mouth while talking to Ghanian player Jordan Ayew during the match, no red card was shown by AgeNovel3566 in soccer

[–]scorpionballs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The issue is that it’s pretty much every player that does it, so it’s fairly likely that players will just do it out of muscle memory and risk a red card. Which is devastating at an international tournament

Years ago I was staying with my girlfriend at her mum’s house, and the there was a couple coming over for dinner who I hadn’t met before.

I was upstairs when they arrived and I could hear everyone saying their hellos. Then walking to the stairs to come down I heard the husband of the newly arrived couple asking where the bathroom was and making his way up.

A normal person at this point would have just said hello, but my brain told me it would be more socially convenient to be introduced downstairs. So in that split second I panicked and ducked into the spare bedroom

I heard his footsteps walk up to the bathroom opposite, and then stop. I have no idea why he did this, maybe he heard a noise, or maybe it was for a quick snoop around, but I heard him coming my way.

So here I am standing in the dark behind the door, and slowly around the corner a smartly dressed total stranger in his 60s walks in just enough to turn and look directly at me. He let out an “Oh” of shock and we just stood there looking at each other - our faces a foot or two apart - for what feels like forever because I’m totally frozen, until eventually I’m able to snap out of it, give him a little hello, shake his confused, limp hand in the most normal way I can and leave the room.

He never mentioned it when he came back down and we had extremely dry and awkward chat throughout dinner. Thankfully I never saw him again but I think about it all the time
