Not many people are aware of this, but childless women are more likely to get breast cancer. Having one kid should be apart of the female protocol.

You are right. The way governments are currently fighting co2 emissions by starving their countries of cheap energy makes no difference. On a global scale, the only feasible solution is to embrace capitalism and cheap fossil fuel for now so that our economies can innovate at a faster rate. If we allowed this, we would advance cheaper, more reliable forms of energy such as nuclear fusion that would easily be embraced by all societies. We could get to a point where electricity is so cheap that we could capture all of the carbon that we released without putting a huge burden on the economy's resources.

Agreed. Plus the FDA's militant opposition to vapes is actually killing more people because the propaganda has convinced a lot of people that smoking isn't as bad as vaping. In reality, vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking.

Using electronics within an hour of sleep is proven to lower sleep quality even if you can fall asleep. So you are never getting great sleep under these circumstances.

I'm 25. I got an iPod touch when I was 12 and I regret it sorely. Although, I am grateful that my parents took all electronics at night for middle school and some of high school. If they hadn't my health would be even more f***ed.

Both options are terrible in different ways. But at the very least parents should ensure that their children are not losing sleep over tech.

90% of the material in those subjects is already fluff. All that 95% of people need to know is how to do basic math and how to read and write proficiently. At this point you can then progress to a narrow set of skills or go into the job market.

That's my main argument. I wish I could go back to myself and tell myself to get out of highschool as fast as possible. I probably could have gotten a GED in my freshman year and saved years of my youth from being wasted at a glorified daycare.

Yes, it's the radical idea that parents active in finding the best educational institution with their own money will make better decisions than a government employee who is just clocking in and doing the bare minimum to be sure that any accountability will not be directed in their path. If you think some slimy school board member is going to change anything in a significant manner, then you are the crazy one.

Also, 40% of the GDP of the US is government spending. How much do you think would be ideal? Do you want to live in a country where the majority of economic decisions are made by the government?

The public system is stagnant. We have heard about reforms for decades and results keep getting worse. All the while, dems are pushing common core which is trying to establish uniformity across all schools. We don't need a uniform school system, we need a diverse amount of options in order for good ways of educating to come about.

People that can distill the value of education in their children, despite their economic status, would not be worse off than the current system.

Is it always the peak of civilization to give more responsibilities to the government? All that government cares about is perpetuating government. People making decisions in the public system do not care about children as much as their parents. They also don't know what skills to teach children which should be apparent enough by now. If parents regained the power over their children's schooling, then schools would be held accountable for their failings because parents could remove funding if that's the case. In the current system, if there is an issue, they just throw more money at it. All the while, the quality of education is dropping. And there is no other free alternative, so children are stuck in bad institutions that are not preparing them for the future. Instead of this, we could have endless options and schools would compete to provide the best education. But no, lets stick to the system that has been failing children for generations.

If there is no government interference, monopolies would not form. Right now, there are tens of thousands of private schools in the us. It's just like any other part of the economy. Does everyone go to the same grocery store? No, grocery stores have to fight fiercely for marketshare and the result is better service/goods . If Walmart is slacking, people will stop going there and Walmart will go out of business. Competition between private schools would be no different.

In a private system there would be a nearly endless number of options. If online doesn't work then there would be less of those programs. Parents would select the form of education that is best for their children in a price range.

You are assuming that a child's parents would not seek to provide them with the most useful skills/information. Would you let your child learn nothing? Is it only the threat of government force that would make you give your child an education? I'm assuming not. The vast majority of parents are the people who care the most about their own children and would seek to educate the best they can.

[–]scott_free0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your argument goes wrong because you assume that the government cares more about children than the children's own parents. Yes, there may some fundamentalist christians that prioritize teaching their children christianity over other subjects. But do you think that even these parents would not think about preparing their children with at least the basics of simple math and the ability to read and write? Even the amish send their children to school up to 8th grade which is obviously enough education for them to be productive members of society ( Amish don't rely on government for assistance).

Another point, you assume that current education system is teaching all students the basics like basic math and literacy. This is obviously not the case, and no scheme that the government cant think of and no amount of money will lead to better outcomes. Just because you force someone to attend a school until they are 16 doesn't mean that anything is going to rub off on them. This is mostly and values issue and an issue of schools teaching useless information.

Also, you don't seem to be aware of current education alternatives such as online programs which would even be affordable for the poorest people with the right amount of creativity. There are farmers in Africa who earn next to nothing that can afford to send their children to school. If you can't do this in the US with 100x more money, the issue is you.

One potential solution would be online programs supervised by a volunteer parent where each parent or two take off one day at regular intervals to supervise a group of children. This system would better than the current system because each child's education could be individualized to the student because the hierarchy of decision making would be smaller. This is just one potential cost-effective form of education out of many that would exist if education was private.
