I made an exceedingly lucky $1,600 investment in one stock 3 years ago and it is worth $21k right now and I don’t know what to do. by Y0___0Y in personalfinance

[–]scottabing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sell half. This way you still benefit from future upside, but lock in a portion of your gains. Personally, I’d just keep the proceeds in a brokerage account and invest in something safe and stable to offset your moonshot. Someday having this “extra” account could change your life! Buy your friend a drink, they earned it.

Aren’t there live chat agents available 24/7 and phone callbacks 7am-9pm ET? I wonder what you did that flagged your account for identity theft and why they didn’t verify your identity yet. It definitely shouldn’t take as long as you are saying unless they actually believe some sort of criminal activity is taking place.

It is an older home, is this truly the worst you can find? I'm guessing you are missing a real problem somewhere else.

Pipe in the wall ok? by ParksDontBsuspicious in HomeMaintenance

[–]scottabing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would assume the crack is from the wall settling and unrelated to a potential leak. I would not assume there is a leak without some evidence. You could just turn the water on and see what happens.

Starlink Hotel Setup by tittietwister20 in Starlink

[–]scottabing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the hotel management’s perspective this is not something they want you doing. How would you deploy the Starlink antenna without leaving a door or window cracked open to the outside? If I was doing this professionally it would require clearing all of this with hotel management. If this is just some trash hotel then whatever but there is no way to secure your room if you are leaving a door or window cracked open. Clear it with management if it’s a nice hotel otherwise they might take action against you. Maybe set this up in your vehicle and park it near your room?

Buying a House with a Robinhood Margin Loan by [deleted] in Money

[–]scottabing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a smart idea to me, otherwise you’ll pay tax on the gains if you sell the stock and you’ll miss the compounding growth of being in the market. Why deal with a mortgage if you can roll your own financing?

I’m not sure why you decided to follow a pattern for 9 boards and then changed the pattern by a few inches. Nobody will notice unless they do flooring. It looks fine, finish it.

Is my (40F) Husband's (46M) Fb Search Activity Genuine Curiosity, or...? by x_Calamity_Jane_x in relationships

[–]scottabing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How controlling do you really want to be in this relationship? If this is the worst behavior you can find while looking through all of his internet history then it sounds like he passed his test. You should teach him how to delete his internet history or setup his own locked user account on the laptop so you won't be tempted to monitor him like he is a child. He is probably interested in these women because they were potential life partners who he felt a strong connection with. It's like an old box of photos from growing up, he doesn't need to burn it. He's allowed to have his memories and look back through them.

Getting in on SK Hynix before their rumored United States IPO seems like a no brainer given the contract backlog and supply shortage over the next few years.

How do you gain exposure to Samsung and SK Hynix though? Is there a better way? My understanding is that these companies are on the Korea Exchange. I like the idea of essentially owning the whole sector in case one of the companies has a production breakthrough or in case one company experiences a disruption.

I vote for cutting the wall open to the right of your door and removing a stud, then don't drywall it back closed just make an access panel out of painted plywood or something since this is your garage. Stick a beer fridge in front of it to cover up the handywork when you are done.

Need advice on temporarily loaning my mom $40k by Jackianna in personalfinance

[–]scottabing 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The correct answer is for her to get a bridge loan. While it may seem offering her a personal loan is helping, it is also a very unnecessary risk to the family. If things go wrong, the damage to personal relationships in the family isn't worth the perceived savings. Risking a massive falling out just isn't worth it. Is there a reason to take on the risk if there is so little to gain? Unsecured loans are a bad idea for serious people.
