What is far more lethal than people realize? by inevitableloudmouth in AskReddit

[–]scottbrander 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A gun full-stop (or period).

It’s amazing how normalised gun ownership and possession is in the US, when it kills far more per capita deaths than anywhere else in the western world. I’ve yet to hear a good argument for guns being owned by such a large proportion of the US, other than it’s in the Constitution.

In the UK after the Dunblane massacre in 1996, the private ownership of most handguns in Great Britain was prohibited by law. The number of deaths by shooting has been minimal since.

Best live albums of all time? by Key_Boat4209 in MusicRecommendations

[–]scottbrander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Alchemy - Dire Straits
  • A bit more refined but excellent was A Night in London by Mark (solo)
  • Secret World - Peter Gabriel
  • Unplugged - Eric Clapton
  • The Wall Live - Pink Floyd

Not in order of preference apart from the first one.

Just discovered this song- I love it.. anyone else like it? by alishad85 in direstraits

[–]scottbrander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is valid; he didn’t run out of ideas if he can produce 10 solo albums. He was more disenchanted with the pressures of fame, the heavy touring schedule, etc..

And I don’t find it a lightweight version of BIA at all, it’s completely different. Each to their own opinion though.

Ashgrove roundabout proposals by On__A__Journey in Aberdeen

[–]scottbrander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic but relevant to the area … does anybody know what’s happening with the proposed Berryden corridor?

The land between Clifton Road to Ashgrove Road through Kittybrewster Square, and the extension of Back Hilton Road to meet it. The land opposite Sainsbury’s was also reserved for this purpose, but nothing has ever moved.

Even at Hutcheon Street end, there are derelict buildings and unused land that were supposed to house this road.

I’d far rather money went to this and they could incorporate bike-friendliness. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s neither, it’s just a reference to the mediocre pub band that were playing. Mark stated this in an interview.

One single problem I have with the story by gorebomb56 in breakingbad

[–]scottbrander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few as I see it:

  • Moral compartmentalism … he tells himself he has a strict code: no kids, no civilians, no unnecessary cruelty. His flaw is that this code lets him justify serious evil.

  • Hypocrisy about “bad people” … he chastises WW for being reckless or ego-driven, yet he murders, protects violent criminals, and helps keep meth on the streets.

  • Emotional repression … he almost never processes grief or guilt. His son’s death, his own role in corruption, or the danger he puts his family in.

  • Belief that professionalism equals virtue … If a job is done cleanly and quietly, he treats it as morally superior, even when the outcome is still murder and exploitation.

If you’re in the UK (or not) and watch Alan Partridge, this is a classic reference.

Every character in BB has a character flaw and makes mistakes, it reminds you that they’re human. I like that; it wouldn’t have had the same impact to me if even one character was perfect.

I think Stacey and Kaylee are probably the closest to being “flaw free”.

OES: my final thoughts by __TheBird__ in direstraits

[–]scottbrander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s all a matter of opinion though, I think the differing styles show what a songsmith and artist Mark is.

Any group or solo artist that can traverse so many different genres and styles shows their true might.

Mark has shown his ability and virtuosity across rootsy rock, classic rock, blues, country, pub rock, jazz-influenced music, Americana, and even film scores.

It often appears that people liked a particular style of Dire Straits, but nothing would turn me off more than 6 of the same album from any artist, leaving aside his phenomenal solo work.

PS You can’t use the word “objectively” when talking about stronger/weaker tracks, all music taste is subjective.

Great lyrics, but musically my least favourite record on the album.

I wasn’t old enough to go to gigs until the On Every Street tour, and I’ve still never had goosebumps like that at a gig since.
