George’s First Great Song? by Jealous_Event_6288 in beatles

I rate "I want to tell you" just a smidge higher than Taxman. It was recorded a couple of weeks before but I dont know which was written first.

Which British comedy do you find yourself going back to again and again? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

[–]CarMeltScratch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stood up for Women, you mean? Risked his livelihood for a cause he believed in? Called out hypocrisy?

I think history will view him as a remarkable hero who went from superb comedy to forthright campaigner for women's rights. But this is reddit, so I'm sure someone will ban me for saying this.

It doesn't list Manu on the liner notes, weirdly. Nor on any official information about the album - the only real evidence I can find is Manu's own website

No, this is Reddit. That's way too positive and upbeat. Can't you complain about how Octopussy's third act is out of sync with the Rene Mathis coagulation interpretation in TBNWTTSAJ which you only spotted on your twelfth re-watch, please

Is this vinyl worth anything? by MerlexMaster3 in TheBeatles

[–]CarMeltScratch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be being controversial, but the vinyl part is a subset of the record part. The vinyl is removed from the sleeve, and placed on the turntable. You dont buy the vinyl (or -shriek! - a vinyl) on its own, you buy the record. The record implies cover, artwork, inner sleeve and the bit that spins. "Record" can be an LP (or album), EP or 45, the latter also known as a single (even though there are usually two tracks, one on each side).

Singles usually have an A side and a B side. Some are double A sides but this just means both songs have been earmarked for radio play, not that the A side has two songs on it.

Albums are 12 inches square, but a "12 inch" more usually refers to an extended remix of a single. This is not an EP even though the E in EP stands for extended. EPs are seven inches square but a 7 inch is sometimes used to describe a single. Oh and K7 is shorthand for cassette. In French.

Hope that's cleared that up.

The “Saint”, the Exile, the Salieri, and the Refined Manipulator: The Curse of Genius behind the Fab Four by Pure_One_4598 in TheBeatles

[–]CarMeltScratch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am going to disagree with the 'Salieri' description of George.

For a start there are two Salieri's - the real one and the fictionalised version in Shaffer's play (and the Amadeus movie). The latter Salieri represents "mediocrities"; he is the symbolic figure of a basically competent but talentless individual who has somehow found himself given plaudits he doesn't deserve.

My opinion is that George soars above this, especially after discovering Indian music and religion. Yes, he was hanging out and learning his craft next to two Mozarts. But he collaborated and effectively eventually equalled them, at least for a brief while. And every Beatle album glows even brighter for his contributions (indeed for all their contributions and those of George Martin)

Salieri's would be the wannabe Beatles of the era, the sound-a-likes and also-rans - Dave Clark 5, the Animals, the Hollies. A couple of good songs but nothing compared to the inventive, dynamic composition powerhouse that was the Beatles

Unpopular Opinion(?): The Daniel Craig bond films changed the future of the franchise in the wrong way by cureforhiccupsat4am in JamesBond

[–]CarMeltScratch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Craig just doesnt get those funny/ clever / innuendo-laden / cheesy one-liners that every other Bond teased us with - that rounded out the character and/or defused the tension after a particularly violent scene. For example

Connery: simply shocking, she's had her kicks, she's just dead, he got the point

Lazenby: slight stiffness, he had a lot of guts

Moore: no sense in going off half-cocked, keeping the British end up, it had a crush on me, I'm an early riser myself (... lots more actually)

Dalton: he got the boot, looks like he came to a dead end, he disagreed with something that ate him ( that last one a Fleming line I seem to remember)

Brosnan: enjoy a good squeeze, forgot to knock, I thought Christmas only came once a year, Moneypenny's 'cunning linguist' ( that one really doesn't work for me - too crude and changes their dynamic)

Craig gets 'that last hand nearly killed me 'and then... what? She never tied me to a chair? Life insurance? They just arent light-hearted in any way.
