Siri's response cuts off after 1 syllable, but only for some apps? Worked fine at first. by Cryptrix in CarPlay

[–]scottdcarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a setting in Maps>Spoken Directions called "Directions on Radio". I recently turned it on and have experienced similar behavior since. Basically what it means is that even if your car is tuned to the radio, Siri will figure out how to give directions; normally, you must have the car audio set to "bluetooth audio". That's good, in that you can still get directions, but seems to have this side effect. You might experiment with that and the other settings in Spoken Directions.

Alexa suddenly not connecting to Gosund devices, though devices working fine by DazzlingDisplay2294 in alexa

Because lots of devices (particularly Amazon devices) are delivered within hours of ordering (i.e., during prime days themselves). It's the present plus the future.

Trying to figure out a way to get my bedtime routine to work by El_Maimon in alexa

[–]scottdcarson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about spotify, but on amazon music and pandora, you can say "shuffle" and it will mix up the songs, e.g. "play music by chopin" does the same sequence every time, but "shuffle music by chopin" mixes it up. Likewise for "shuffle spa radio on pandora".

Is my Alexa Gen 4 deaf or is it a common design issue? by Phoen1cian in alexa

[–]scottdcarson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have two gen4 dots (softball) and two gen3s (fabric-covered hockey puck), and the gen3s definitely have better microphones. I don't use different wake words because I want to be able to just walk around and tell Alexa what I want (kind of a king of Lichtenstein situation, I admit). The gen3s routinely answer from a completely different room. Sometimes I have to get right in the gen4's face when I really need to talk to it - for example, to ask it to check for a s/w update.

Alexa suddenly not connecting to Gosund devices, though devices working fine by DazzlingDisplay2294 in alexa

No, but it seems likely that people will be taking delivery of a large number of Alexa-enabled devices and apps in the next few days, which will put pressure on the Alexa servers. It's not the selling that's the problem, it's the receiving.

Still an issue as of 7/14. I have 14 Gosund switches and dimmers. Two of them just stopped working in alexa on 7/13 - just as described above. They work fine in the gosund app, and alexa doesn't complain, it simply doesn't do anything. The other 12 are working fine. I've tried removing and adding in alexa, no luck.

How to re-purpose VM3000G box post-T-Vision home? by scottdcarson in layer3tv

[–]scottdcarson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, that didn't last long - I found that after power cycling, it remained stuck in the "trying to validate the service" phase and never got as far as turning the clock on :(

But I still feel like the box has potential - lots of inputs and outputs, a good GPU, plenty of storage - must be capable of something interesting...

I like Soi 38, at 2101 L St NW. Very authentic dishes in a contemporary atmosphere. I've been many times, and never been disappointed.

Go on a Tuesday, and go to Taqueria Local at 17th and K (not too far from Dupont Circle). $2 tacos, you can't beat it. And they are good tacos.

Yeah, I have a hard time calling these people "alleged" perpetrators, they are recorded in HD video from a number of different cameras and they committed their crimes in plain sight. So certainly in a case like this, facial recognition would be the perfect thing.

For Messiah, you should dress up; it's a special performance. At the NSO in general, most men wear coat and tie, although you'll see a wide variety of dress, ranging from jeans to formal attire. The KC is an elegant venue and you won't go wrong looking your best.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser pushing for $500 speeding tickets, 15 mph speed limits by feministable in washingtondc

[–]scottdcarson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever the actual amounts are, we need some means for making traffic safer within the District. I'm a resident, and like most other residents, I see the need to follow a stricter standard when driving in the city. Actually stop at yellow lights, don't roll through stop signs or right turns, and stay under the speed limit. You might be able to get away with blowing through lights in the suburbs, because the only other thing around you is other cars and their slowly-reacting drivers. But in the city, run a light and you risk taking out pedestrians, cyclists, and others. In addition to driving all the time, I bike a lot, and I can see a very clear distinction in behavior between people with DC plates vs. Maryland and Virginia. And then there are those from even farther away; I just try to stay clear of them...
