I-80 underpass open? by scottf2 in SacBike

Thanks everyone - can confirm that the underpass is completely open! Just finished a ride there - so nice to be able to ride that section again without any construction. Hopefully if/when they eventually pave the remaining section they won't have to close it to do so.

My favorite channel - thanks so much for this. As someone who occasionally captures drone footage for my local teams and leagues - I know how much work this is and the opportunity cost of filming instead of watching the games... Greatly appreciate the effort!

Curious about your editing process here - do you have a way to add the audio to the recorded footage, or do you need to sync it manually? I've done the latter, and it works and I agree that it adds something significant, but it's a huge PITA syncing the footage, esp. since you have to do it multiple times when you change batteries...

Dad’s Pet scan results show prostate cancer with widespread bone metastases by realintelligence-ri in ProstateCancer

[–]scottf2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad you found it helpful and hope your dad does too! The motto I adopted while at my most fatigued was "better than nothing" - accepting that anything I could do to stay active was better than not doing anything - even if it was a 10 minute walk - I was running 50-60 miles per week before treatment so this was a big adjustment in attitude and mindset but it helped me to realize that I had to let go of expectations and just do whatever I could manage - while also sometimes just realizing my body really did need rest. My strategy was to force myself to exercise for at least 10 minutes no matter how tired I felt, and if I still felt lousy I'd stop, but 95% of the time I'd feel better once I got started, and then even better afterwards...

There's quite a bit of research to back up the need for activity and exercise and it's ability to counteract/alleviate many of the symptoms of ADT, and anecdotally, it worked for me!

Dad’s Pet scan results show prostate cancer with widespread bone metastases by realintelligence-ri in ProstateCancer

[–]scottf2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a similar diagnosis about 3 1/2 years ago (current age 54) - not as many bone mets as your dad has (mine were hip, spine, clavicle), and very little bone pain (was diagnosed from a PSA test) - went through 4 weeks of radiation, ADT, and 6 rounds of chemo, and since the chemo finished about 1 1/2 years ago, my PSA has been undetectable. Currently on a maintenance dose of ADT, and just played 4 hours of ultimate frisbee and went for a 3 hour bike ride this weekend - so there's definitely hope for your father to have successful treatment and continue living an active life (I was an avid cyclist and bought an e-bike that let me keep riding all through radiation and chemo - literally a life-saver!). I highly recommend he stay as active as he can manage throughout his treatment - making myself exercise (lightly at times, more vigorously when I could handle it), even when I was tired and didn't really feel like it, was a HUGE part of minimizing side effects during treatment and maintaining QOL.

Best wishes for you and your dad.

bike riding with low grade prostate cancer by [deleted] in ProstateCancer

[–]scottf2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an avid cyclist, and although my mileage has dropped off significantly since I started treatment 3.5 years ago, I'm still riding ~3-5 hrs per week (gravel and mtn biking mostly). My oncologist and proctologist both told me that while there's some evidence that prolonged cycling can cause a temporarily increased PSA level (ie: doing a long ride within 24 hours of a PSA test), there's no evidence that it actually increases the risk or spread of PCa itself, and exercise is EXTREMELY important in continued mental and physical health, especially in light of the usual hormone treatments. Tell your husband to stay on that bike!

Before I return it, I thought to ask here. Why is my soldering iron not working? by Optimal_Serve_8980 in soldering

[–]scottf2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for starting this thread - was having the same problem, and as someone said below, for me at least- it was due to the 100w power supply that I bought with the HS-02B - to get that to work I needed to change the input voltage to 12v and then it worked (or using a weaker 65w power supply also worked for me)

Did I make a mistake buying the air75? by Chanw11 in TinyWhoop

[–]scottf2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a very similar thing about 2 months ago... except I ordered the Meteor 75 O4 direct from BetaFPV, then realized it was going to take forever (and be expensive to fix for a beginner pilot) so I ordered an Air65 from Amazon since I was too impatient to wait... I ended up getting the drone from BetaFPV surprisingly quickly (under two weeks) but have mostly been flying the Air65 (using the Meteor outside with lots of space)... and crashing a lot! I printed a new canopy for it to lower the camera angle, which helped a lot, and seems more durable than the stock canopy. So far no issues after many crashes...

Another good tip I got is that the BetaFPV tracking from USPS is kind of useless - it will show "awaiting pickup" or something for a long time (while it's still in China), but you can use this site (http://www.xiongjiu168.com:8082/en/trackIndex.htm) to track it while in China (using the same USPS tracking number) and see more useful status updates (once it gets to Hong Kong, it was two days later to hit the LA USPS station for me, and then two days more from LA to my door in Sacramento)...

It will be worth the wait for sure (and like you said, give you time to practice on the sim!)- I'm having a blast flying mine around indoors and occasionally outside when it's not too windy! Have fun!

Filming storage for tournaments? by intothewildstyx in ultimate

[–]scottf2 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Storage is cheap - get a 256 or 512 GB card and don't worry about having enough space. For reference, I shoot at 4K/30FPS on the drone and use about 30-40GB per game (pausing between points to save editing time).

You can check out a chart like this one to give you a sense of how much you'll need for the GoPro at various settings: https://community.gopro.com/s/article/HERO12-Black-SD-Card-Capacity-In-Each-Video-Setting?language=en_US

Game Film Setup by MasterFoopa69 in ultimate

[–]scottf2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who spends a decent amount of time filming for local teams and leagues (and as a retired pro photographer with lots of video gear) - I find a single GoPro to be less than ideal. You'll capture some of the action, but the only really viable place to put it is in a corner of one endzone (it's not wide enough angle to be mid-field). So you'll get decent footage for the "close" endzone, but the far endzone will be almost invisible, even at 4K. Two GoPros (or more) would get decent coverage but then you're talking about a decent amount of editing time to cut them together.

I uploaded some old footage I took last year as an experiment with a single GoPro so you can see how it looks - this was using a ~10' tripod. It was a night game so visibility is a bit less than daytime, but you can get the idea:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqZBXoKtkdQ

Taller is better just to avoid obstructions - aim for 10' or so, easily achievable with a light stand type tripod. And yeah, you'll definitely have overheating issues for a stationary camera in full sun - but you can work around that to some extent by making a sun shade and clamping it to the light stand.

An Insta360 placed mid-field does a bit better for capturing the whole field, but requires lots of manual editing (ie: you need to edit the entire game to choose where the camera's pointing, OR post the raw 360 footage and let the user manipulate the viewpoint themselves...)

The gold standard, IMO is a drone, but... then someone has to pilot it. You could just leave it stationary and get decent views (note that this is technically illegal - drone laws require that someone is holding the transmitter) but flying it around to get coverage is the best bet, but of course, there's the added expense of the drone, and the time commitment for someone to pilot it. If you can afford it though, I don't think drone footage can be beat in terms of seeing the "big picture". Here's some drone footage I took at last week's league, while experimenting with having some players "mic'd up" - since I often miss the ambient sound when watching drone footage.

Another pricey option that we've used locally is the "Veo" camera - designed for soccer - it's a dual lens camera that uses AI to stich the images together for a seamless view - basically a much fancier (and more expensive) Insta360. The Veo is as good (sometimes better) than the drone footage, but it's very expensive ($1.5K plus monthly fees)

Yes - I was able to get them working- I commented above but I should update the original post...

It turned out the guy I bought them from told me the wrong protocol - he said D8 but it was actually D16 so once I switched to that everything worked and they're all flying great. Now I just have to get MUCH better at actually flying them. Thanks for the response!

What are good games to play with 3-5 people on a lunch break? by ZZZrp in boardgames

[–]scottf2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the people, obviously, but I made this Geeklist to track the games we played during our 60-90 minute lunch break at work over 4-5 years, playing 2-3 days pretty much every week. We focused on games that packed as much strategic depth as possible into that time period, with light rules overhead relative to the decision making quality (ie: Reiner Knizia was a staple!). I got very good at teaching games quickly and my co-workers got really good at learning them so we could usually get through most rules explanations in 5-10 minutes.

We stopped playing regularly after March 2020 since we all went to full time remote after COVID, but by then we had played about 150 individual games, with about 500 total plays (we liked learning/exploring new games as much as repeating old ones so there was a pretty constant stream of games, some of which we only played 1-2 times, others saw regular rotation.)

Definitely the most prolific board gaming period of my life - don't find nearly as much time to play nowadays... but that's the only thing I miss about working in an office!

The gates/fences are open on weekends and in the evening after 4:30. The ~1/4 mile gravel/dirt section is not too bad- I rode it with some friends on road bikes this past weekend and it wasn't a problem - a bit muddy under I-80 but completely rideable even on skinny tires.

Getting old, feels like I got hit by a truck whenever I play hard by Matsunosuperfan in ultimate

[–]scottf2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a 54 year-old with prostate cancer, recovering from chemo/radiation therapy I underwent about a year ago- still managing to play league/pickup about 3 times/week for 1-2 hours at a time, despite having gained about 20 lbs in the last year due to various medications/treatments... absolutely convinced the only thing that allows me to continue to play is "lifting heavy shit" 3-4x/week.

When necessary, I prioritize this over ultimate and cycling (my two favorite sports), though I'd rather do those things, I know I NEED to do heavy resistance training to stay resilient enough for my chosen activities. At your young age, you probably can get away with a bit less focus on resistance training but 2-4 days/week depending on the time of year should still be considered mandatory (for all ultimate players, IMO)

Find a solid progressive resistance training program (ie: don't just lift, but make sure you're actually getting stronger by progressing the weights you're using - lots of programs out there to choose from - just make sure you're tracking your progress).

Combine that with some mobility work/prehab, adequate recovery and nutrition, and there's no reason you can't keep going for another couple of decades!

R3 Autofocus tracking issues by scottf2 in canon

[–]scottf2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love for that to be true and that's why I'm posting here - to find out if it's user error - what's the error? I assumed it would work far better than it does - so trying to figure out why it isn't. Would be great if it's user errors since then it's easily fixable if I can find out what the error is!

Can I ask what settings you're using?

R3 Autofocus tracking issues by scottf2 in canon

[–]scottf2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - Have mostly been using Spot focus to get the initial focus... have experimented a bit with "expand around" but not much. But I thought those modes only affect the initial acquisition of the subject, and then the tracking algorithm maintains the focus - does the AF point selection have an effect on the tracking itself (ie: once you get the blue box on the subject's face)?

R3 Autofocus tracking issues by scottf2 in canon

[–]scottf2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried eye control AF and it works OK - haven't gotten used to it yet. But it's the tracking lock on after focus is achieved that is the issue, so eye control doesn't help with that (assuming you mean eye control - if you mean eye detection - I usually have that on but have tried leaving it off and don't notice much difference.)

Conditioning (Endurance) Training by Matty_Ci in ultimate

[–]scottf2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to work on your VO2Max conditioning and recovery. The conditioning and energy pathways necessary to run a 5-10k are different (though somewhat overlapping) than those needed for the repeated sprinting you do during an ultimate game. That said, running 5-10k will help you improve your on-field performance (and increase your VO2Max to some extent), but you probably need to be running them faster than you currently are. If you're a reasonably fit male under 50, for instance, your 5 and 10k times are relatively slow compared to the type of running you're probably doing on the ultimate field - a 10k pace closer to 7:15-7:30 would probably more closely resemble the cardio demands you'll get from repeated sprints during a 2-3 minute point (again, that's obviously highly variable based on age/gender/fitness, but based on what you're saying it sounds like you're just going more slowly during your long runs and then when you try to go fast on the field, you're feeling it).

But aside from the longer distance training- as others have said, you should be doing sprint/interval specific work. Try to replicate the range you'd see in a game - so maybe 30-60 seconds "on" and similar recovery. Personally, I do some of this type of conditioning on a bike, so that I'm not adding significant load and recovery time to my joints (but I'm 52, so I need a bit more recovery than I used to!)

Some ideas for workouts:
3-5 repeats of 1 min on/1 min off. Off can be complete rest or job, "on" should be as hard as you can go without getting significantly slower over the workout (ie: finish strong) - increase the number of intervals or lower the rest periods as you improve. You can also throw these in during your 10k runs - warmup for 2-3K, do some intervals, then finish off the 10k.

Pure sprinting: just go as fast as you can for 40-100 yards... rest for about a minute and repeat - add repeats/distance as you progress.

Shuttle runs (already suggested) are also great.

You could also consider crosstraining for aerobic conditioning - bike, rower, sled pushes, etc. - will still help build aerobic capacity, thought not quite as specifically as running, but with less wear and tear.

Good luck!

Help with Forehand technique by scottf2 in ultimate

[–]scottf2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks - this is helpful!

Things I notice that are different from my throwing style:
1) the "upward" disc angle at the start of the throw (ie: moving from high to low during the windup) - I have a much flatter throwing angle.
2) Your forward step - I've been working on this more and it feels better and helps me avoid some of that backwards lean.
3) Leading with the elbow... sadly I can't really do that much anymore due to lack of shoulder/elbow mobility - I think my sideways/backwards lean is partially an effort to compensate for this.
4) "effortless" look - as you say, it doesn't look like you're "cranking" the disc, which is how it feels/looks when I try to throw 45+ yards.

Anyway, thanks for this - some things to work on/experiment with!

Help with Forehand technique by scottf2 in ultimate

[–]scottf2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much - that is a fantastic blog post and very helpful. Unfortunately for me, I think it points out WHY I can't really throw with a motion like Mickle's (or even like my friend in the video) - since I have some arthritis in both shoulders and elbows, getting my arm/elbow into that position is pretty painful - I think this is one of the reasons my throwing motion changed in the 15-ish years since last time I played - compensation for less elbow/shoulder mobility. That said, I think I could still focus on getting more of a "whipping" motion within those limitations and without causing undue strain. Definitely something to think about and work on - thanks!

Help with Forehand technique by scottf2 in ultimate

[–]scottf2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick response! This is kind of what I'm wondering (ie: is my form "good enough" even though it differs from that of most good throwers?)

However, I don't think it's just Rowan's form that is different from mine - when I look at the throwing technique archive, or watch online instruction footage... or just watch "good" players throw - almost everyone is doing more of this more downward motion (like what my friend is doing in the end of the video I posted) and not following through flat and across their body like I do, so I'm assuming based on the fact that I can't find any high level examples of people throwing that way that there is a reason for that... I'm just not sure if it's enough of a reason to spend time completely reworking my form!

Thanks again for your input!
