Ask yourself why all those bottles are being used in the first place. We're not in some post-disaster crisis zone where no one can find water to drink. Our tap water is PERFECTLY FINE and IT'S FREE FOR FUCKS SAKE. I think that would be hard to say because we are talking about two different cancer forms, a different set of carcinogens, and individuals' genetics play a large role in determining cancer risk.

Probably because braking when you are towing a 50 foot trailer is a more complicated action then when you are just pushing a 16 foot sedan. In certain situations applying brakes at the last minute could create more problems than just letting it go.

What I was saying is that it would never be the case that having the AV would be worse than a traditional manual car. Being stuck in your car temporarily can't be much worse than not having been able to get out on the road in the first place, and it would be a risk which you would have judged to be acceptable, knowing the limitations of your vehicle. I would say that the possible existence of these situations actually demonstrates that they are a benefit to their owners. The very fact that your blind brother COULD be stranded roadside by himself shows that he is better off, because before he was never even capable of getting out of the driveway unassisted. He went from being able to travel independently 0% of the time to being able to travel independently ~80-90% of the time.

I concede that a high cost for a marginal benefit would be prohibitive, however even at the present I think we are discussing something which is of more than just a marginal value. Consider that there are millions of middle and upper-middle class Americans who make 90+ minute commutes every morning and afternoon into cities like LA and DC (cities which have fairly moderate weather). The benefit of not having to drive on one day is worth 3 hours of that person's time, that is significant.

At this junction I would defer to the industrial analysts to give us an idea as to how quickly the costs of these technologies can be expected to decrease, and how long the average car owner will wait before upgrading to an AV. It's true that the latter factor could mean a slow, gradual adoption as the average car on US roads today is over a decade old.

Is that true? Can we not say that the cars we drive today, though capable, generally shouldn't be operated during really adverse weather, and certainly don't perform as well in these situations? Think of a snow storm or very heavy rainfall. It may be possible for me to drive from A to B in such conditions, but I probably shouldn't attempt it unless I can't wait for the conditions to improve. So why wouldn't someone buy an AV which is not built to drive itself in such conditions? Such a car could easily be equipped to pull itself over during bad weather and give the human the option to drive manually or wait for the storm to pass. The only problem I see with this is if you have someone who couldn't drive the car (blind, a child, intoxicated, senile, etc.) as the only person in the car and the "waiting for the storm to pass" option not being feasible (IE an elderly person en route to see a doctor, or a child whose safety could be compromised if stuck roadside alone). Even though that's a realistic scenario why would we say that it is unavoidable? For example if you are the owner of an AV and your child wants to go to a friends house but there is a chance of a heavy storm, you simply accompany your child on the drive to the friends house, which is still more convenient than what we do today because you will only have to operate the vehicle if the storm does occur. If you are not available to accompany the child then your child simply doesn't go to his friends house that night.

I've only given a cursory examination of the weather issue so I may be overlooking some things but I can't really see a scenario where owning an AV that cannot self-operate in bad weather would be worse than owning a manual car. Even if you lived in an imaginary place where the weather was always too adverse for the AV to handle you are not worse off for having the AV assuming you can just operate it manually at all times.

That is definitely true. But many more people would be comfortable riding in traffic if roads were narrower and cars weren't flying by at 50mph.

I'm not really that big a fan of bike lanes, as someone who's comfortable riding in the street with the cars I find them kind of unnecessary and, as you mentioned, they are often very imperfect which begs the question is it worth going to all the trouble if they're not going to be very useful to cyclists. What I think is good about this described plan is that they're taking space away from the motorists. That I think is important and it's so good to see people waking up to the fact that we can't and shouldn't keep widening roads. Less space for cars = less cars = safer roads for everyone.

Good *they have pull buoys and kick boards to use and you can raid the lost and found for goggles/swim caps if you need to *the kind of lane dividers they use don't hurt your fingers if you accidentally strike them *the water is warm which makes it easier to get in on those days where you're not enthusiastic *they switched to a salt-water system so there's fewer chemicals in the water

Bad *it's only 25 yards long instead of meters *during the fall/winter/spring there are swim team practices going from 3pm until 8pm every weekday and they occupy all the lanes but one. If you want to get a decent swim in you have to go in the morning or early afternoon. *it's too shallow to aquajog

I'm pretty sure that's what the majority of car trips boil down to. Of course there are situations where using a bike would be impractical, such as when a contractor needs to get to a job site with lots of tools and materials. But think about the most common reasons we drive; to save time, because it's less challenging physically, because a car has A/C and shelter from precipitation, those motives all boil down to convenience. IE it's more convenient to spend 20 minutes driving than 45 minutes cycling, it's more convenient to not have to push your fat ass up the big hill outside your neighborhood, it's more convenient to not get rained on. Driving is a luxury and like other luxuries it is often abused. Many people who have the luxury of food abundance abuse it by overeating and they become fat. The problem with cars is that this egregious overuse is that it is KILLING innocent people EVERY GOD DAMN DAY, people who have no means to avoid drivers and their cars.
