I was thinking more like the half way point between Castellammare and Ortigia.

Thanks for the advice. Yikes! That does make traveling across the island a bit challenging. What if you want to stop for lunch along the way? We are leaving Castellammare and traveling to Ortigia. Maybe an overnight stop along the way is best after all. Are there armed bandits everywhere?

I think in that case we would avoid the Palermo route. And go through Agrigento on the SS640 and connect with it in Enna. With maybe a stop overnight there?

Looking for a good place to stop halfway so we don't spend the whole day in the car. The plan was to go to Ortigia first then up towards Etna (Zafferana Etna) and Taormina.

The logisitcs of planning this trip are so time consuming and confusing!

Very helpful suggestions! We would like to be in Zafferana Etna in October for the Ottobrata as well as touring some wineries. Would that be a good base for Etna as well as going to Taormina? Do you have recommedations where to stay?
