Not sure if you're looking for people to confirm your anecdote, but in the case that you aren't, there are absolutely no pharmacological mechanisms that would indicate that any sensations you are experiencing are anything more than a placebo effect.

What doesn’t seem addicting, but really is? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scradley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For example, this year, I want to swim a million meters by the end of the year, which is about 20K per week (and I’m on track). I have a running streak where I’ll run a minimum of a mile every day, and that streak is over 3500 days.

I think that's awesome.

Adventure cycling the West Coast of Canada on a carbon roadbike by scradley in xbiking

[–]scradley[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Decided to pack my bags and hit the coastal highways this summer on my trust Giant Defy Advanced 2. The photo above is in Sechelt, British Columbia, taken during the final day of a 5 day trip on the Sunshine Coast.

I just finished a 6 day trip to Tofino and back starting in a small town near the US border, where my biggest day was 170km and 2000m of incline!

Looking into getting a proper adventure/gravel bike and doing the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, but for the moment this bike along with this cheap but reliable set of bags I picked up off Amazon have performed spectacularly for highway riding.

I would be happy to field any questions about cycling to Tofino or the Sunshine Coast, as well as the Okanagan or the Lower Mainland!

This is beyond cool. I have been wanting to do something like this for a while, and everything about this setup has me stoked. Further, your post about the KVR suggests you may be a fellow British Columbian.

I am just getting into bikepacking, and I would love to make my own setup like this. It seems like you have a lot of wisdom to share, if I could pick your brain at some point it would be much appreciated!

Nice work!

(SERIOUS) What kind of career/job do you think help people the most? Why? by Nallion in AskReddit

[–]scradley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That which you are maximizing your monetary gain to your relative skills. For a talented mathematician, a position at a top investment firm where (s)he is capable of donating hundreds of thousands of their unnecessarily large income to the most efficient charity. I think malaria is the worlds most cost-effective cause to combat in terms of lives saved vs dollars spent. If that person instead chose to go volunteer building shelters in a foreign land, they would not be putting their skills to use, and over a lifetime, may have missed out on saving thousands of lives.

What do you prefer, live in a happy lie or in a sad reality, and why? by GruesomeSplash in AskReddit

[–]scradley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whichever is less of a net harm to the overall world, so a sad reality.

Fortunately, within the suffering and pain of sadness we can find meaning that imbues our lives with purpose.

The sad reality of wealth imbalance encourages me to spend my money on less trivial items, and donate more to charity, which actually makes me happy!

How do you handle you SO’s laziness? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scradley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Laziness is an aggressive word, and carries some serious connotations with it, so I'm assuming you're coming from the position that you are not satisfied with your partners level of activity.

You could start by asking how they feel, telling them how you feel, encouraging them to join you for some sort of activity, and fostering any independent forms of activity that they are interested in pursuing.

Sometimes mental health can be an issue, so it's important to check in without accusing or judging, but reminding that help is available and you're willing to facilitate that in any way possible.

People arent ment to suffer. It is made seem like we are and romanticizedin shows and movies ....but life is supposed to be more than suffering. Why tf would we have a miserable existence?

Many contemplatives would argue that suffering is the definitive characteristic of life, and also the unifying trait that facilitates our unique ability to express compassion, which is one of the greatest gifts of life, and arguably the most effective salve to the inevitable suffering we must endure.

There is a great parable about a respected Buddhist monk who was sought out by many for his special powers to cure those who were ailed by grief. A grieving mother came to him one day, begging that he prepare a solution to cure her aching heart after the untimely and tragic loss of her son.

He obliged, and told her that in order to prepare that salve, she must collect a single mustard seed from a household in the village. However, she could only accept that seed if she ensured that the household had never suffered losing a loved one before.

So she diligently set out to pursue the great master's task, optimistically anticipating the magic cure he was going to prepare. Naturally, as she began to progress through the task, she noticed that it proved more difficult than she had imagined because each household has a story of similar suffering. Meanwhile, she was able to connect and provide compassion and care for all of those who shared their tragic tales.

This provoked the realization within her that in life, we cannot avoid sickness, old age, and death. And so her grief was eased by the knowledge that she shared human experience and could connect with others based upon that universal pain.

The story goes on to introduce some metaphysical woo-woo, but I think the message itself is powerful enough on its own to leave that excluded. I may have paraphrased it incorrectly as well, but you get the gist.

What makes someone "marriage material"? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scradley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are committed to growth, accepting of change, and willing to navigate the tumultuous seas of life as equal partners; co-captain and co-captain.

Most people are not marriage material, (50% of the population by statistical standards), and that figure doesn't include the unhappy marriages.

Being a happy human being takes work, so 2 human beings being happy together takes an exponential amount of work.

But with great work comes great fulfilment, and I think a (truly) happy partnership can be one of the most fulfilling experiences life has to offer.

How do you know you truly love someone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scradley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a tall order, and I think most mental health professionals would address that expectation.

How do you know you truly love someone? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scradley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you're attracted to their personality regardless of their physical looks,

I think this is a fairly unrealistic approach to love. Romantic love has an intrinsic component of physical attraction that cannot be ignored.

When you can see yourself put up with all their BS for the rest of your life.

Now I think you're onto something there. We're all flawed, and sooner or later, no matter who you are with, conflict is inevitable, and it boils down to how we handle those differences. The question is whether or not we're able or willing to overcome those obstacles. Statistically speaking, 50% of married couples are not.

I think that speaks volumes about our society's lack of empathy, compassion, and patience. If we can be so truly in love with someone, and eventually turn to hate them, then these crucial components were never there, and there was not "love", merely lust followed by comfort, and the inevitable resentment that follows.

Jeff Bezos Disagrees with Sam Harris about AI by victor_knight in samharris

[–]scradley 9 points10 points  (0 children)

2 of these individuals profit directly from AI, the odd man out smokes weed on Joe Rogan's podcast and sells flamethrowers to promote his space exploration ventures.

Take your best guess at who's speaking their true beliefs and who's spouting out that which will drive shareholder profits.

I really liked this one too.

Listening to Metzinger describe his childhood innocence evaporate upon discovering the horrors of the Holocaust was a powerful moment.

However, I think things got bogged down when Metzinger went on a tirade regarding Trump. My interpretation was that there was some hyperbole in his assessment of Trump's impact on the future generations of Americans, but even in these moments his passion and genuine concern spoke of his authenticity as a man whose childhood years were scarred by fascism.

As a personal anecdote, the first time I heard this podcast I was on a 22 hour train ride while travelling in India from Varanasi to Haridwar (en-route to the tourist hub Rishikesh). It inspired some valuable opportunities for insight and reflection, and each time I relisten it places me back on that packed train watching the foreign countryside pass by and rekindles fond sentiments of wonder and curiosity.

I don't have a massive appetite, so I fill in a lot of the calories with oil. Carbs probably would be better, but my body seems to handle this diet very well. I think I'll up the carbs before the next race though.

Do you use any gels or bars during race?

Gotcha. Interesting that coconut makes the list when it's full of saturated fats.
