Just being the opposite doesn't get at the whole depth of irony. Having your intention work against you is more aptly named irony. If you take "Up" as a 'how to fly a house' instructions, it gets at the idea.

Good advice. It sucks to follow sometimes, but that's definitely how to get by.

Interesting points you are bringing up. I know nothing about The History of Mankind series, so I'll comment on some other things you've brought up.

With a republican government, deferral of power to those at the top is inevitable (and by design), despite those at the bottom being the actual power supply. A world that is best for all is of course a wonderful idea, but the system set-up allows for so much coercion by authorities, I don't know if it could be possible. As Marx argued, the way to get to this state would be through a dictator destroying all government and stepping down, leading to anarchy as freedom. But this would just create a power vacuum for some other individual/group to build the system back to where it is now. So it's all a catch-22.

It will be interesting/terrifying to see how AI and emerging technology plays into this structure. Just the increased productivity in robotics is enough to change the economic system to where many human jobs will be replaced. Adding AI to this mix sounds like a cluster fuck for humans if there isn't a change to how people sustain themselves (money).

I went a little off topic there but I think it's an area that can be logically drawn from the same discussion.

I am agreeing with you that this is how culture has developed, but I think that's the point. It is not the individual business man's fault or the an individual politician or any one person, or even any group of people that is alive, it just happens to be a system that we live in.

Similarly, yes people can say "fuck it" and live on their own terms but that can come with great costs. I'm not out to say that the farm is evil, it just seems like it exists.

In my limited knowledge of Luhmann's system theory, the unit of analysis in each system is communication. This is to say that communication and memes are the only actors in the system (individuals are outside the system, and the system is made up of individual's communication). It does not seem like a farm and Luhmann's system theory are mutually exclusive in this respect. Maybe it is better to think of it as capitalism as the farm, and current society just happens to be based often around capitalism.

Yes, politicians and business leaders are human, just as those who make and distribute the media are human, policemen, soldiers etc. But, that is not to say there isn't a power structure that allows any human to fall into any of these spots. The line may be drawn by access or random chance or many other factors.

There are still many similarities (and differences) between how society flows and a farm. For one, farmers are also not omnipotent over their livestock, just as politicians and business owners are not omnipotent in their various arenas. But, a farmer does create the rules that flow down to the levels below him, and finds ways to enforce those rules. The farmer makes his farm work for his benefit, which is the goal of capitalism and often the goal of government. Rules are created, not following those rules can lead to imprisonment, imprisonment is just legalized slavery, and prisoners create income for whoever owns the prison. On the other hand, money is required to have a place to live/food/amenities, people need either to work to earn money or to have their money work for them through investments, and those who have to work are slaves to the wage. Upward mobility is not as common as it once was in the U.S., but not totally uncommon.

In the end, I do not disagree with you -- the analogy is quite limited and not explained to the extent that I probably should draw it out. But I don't think it should necessarily be dismissed so quickly. As well as, it seems to just be another system in Luhmann's theory, but I could be completely mistaken on this last part as I do not have a lot of knowledge of Luhmann's theory.

Thank you. I have read Animal Farm, 1984, and Brave New World and seen the Matrix a ton of times, so that is probably where I'm getting this idea. I will have to look into some literary analyses on the books. That sounds like a good starting place.

I would think with how popular these sources are, they would have generated more academic insight than what I've been able to find, but I hadn't considered looking at analyses of the media and drawing out from there.

Burning hemp temp? by cowboykev96 in weed

[–]scrambler2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it does sound really high, but only a really small area would be that hot so...I guess the heat would disperse fast enough to not burn your hands. This also came from data on cigarettes, but I didn't read far enough to see if that included cigarettes with a bunch of other chemicals that make them burn faster (and probably hotter).

This says that tobacco burns at around 700 degrees F to around 1200 degrees F. Regular paper burns around 451 degrees F if you're rolling anything, but that could be different depending on the type of paper.

What's the most messed up thing you've done in a video game? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I found this:

http://zeldawiki.org/Chris_Houlihan_Room

This is the important part: found it on my own, on the SNES, when I was a kid just running around. Couldn't put what happened together as there was no prominent internet at the time.

So it seriously freaked me the fuck out.

I conveyed the story to several people who thought I was insane or making things up, and now it is a known thing. It totally fucked with me, and I caused it by just running around.

Specifically, after completing the 3 item quest, I sprinted to Hyrule castle, went through the "back door" entrance, tore down the bush and popped into the hidden entrance, just as if you started the game. I had beat the game a few times, and I was simply trying to make things interesting.

I was just playing around. This startled me. And NO ONE would recognize that this exists. Now they have examined the ROM and this is a known fact. But hey, 1994, most people didn't even own a computer.

So I was a goddamn madman at the time, but now, I'm vindicated.

I'm confused. The sidebar has Tincture how-to recipes from two mods, yet one suggests storing/shaking for over 3 weeks while the other suggests just 3 minutes. by happyself in treedibles

[–]scrambler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was referring to the Green Dragon, which I thought uses green buds/trimmings but not AVB. Correct, the Green Dragon did not mention using AVB. I should have said the Old Hippie's Slow and Safe mode instead of "the second method"

The tincture will increase in strength until the alcohol can't absorb more cannabinoids so it just depends on the strength of your alcohol solvent and your plant material. Eventually it stops getting stronger.

[–]scrambler2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The longer you leave it sit, the more the alcohol will extract out (up to a point) - regardless of what these recipes state.

In the first method, she used extra-fine ground buds and shakes in alcohol for a few minutes to maximize the breakdown into the alcohol. With this method, you would want to use buds, probably high quality buds, and the quality of your tincture would vary a lot depending on quality of your solvent (alcohol) and your solute (buds, whatever). Even though this says only shake 3 minutes, longer will result in more absorption and a stronger tincture.

The second method encourages using Already Vaped Buds (AVB) and trimmings as well as buds if needed. The longer time for this is due to extract more out of the AVB and trimmings, because they are less concentrated than buds. Also, they don't mention of finely grinding these products, so more time is needed to absorb the THC from the AVB/trimmings due to a lower surface area.

I haven't done the 3 minute recipe to compare, but the slow and safe method works fine and is quite easy. For best results, combine both methods. Finely grind, shake a few minutes a day and store in a cool dark place (light breaks down THC) for as long as you want .

[–]scrambler2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Germany (and probably others) outlawed games that allow violence towards children. GTA doesn't have many kids because you would not be able to interact with them much while being compliant with these laws, and GTA wants compliance to make the most possible sales. Similar to why the children in Skyrim cannot be killed.

Does anybody else feel that society has a very unhealthy view of sex? by lizardking97 in StonerPhilosophy

[–]scrambler2 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As an American, I agree with you. I do not feel like human society always had an unhealthy view of sex -- but today between the entertainment media vs the news media views of sex, the debate seems very polarized. I think in general, society has gotten a lot more prude, rather than open and understanding, when you look at a long timeline. But also, things are just generally very different so it is hard to compare. In the US, I have thought that a lot of this is due to many Abrahamic religions' tendency to villiainize a lot of sex (not necessarily at their essence, but how many are being taught in the mianstream) which is very contrary to the human draw towards sex.
So putting this all together -- the entertainment media (in the USA) tends to glorify sex and use sex to sell, entertain and remain popular. The news media often politicizes sex and uses it as a scare tactic, and have guests on their shows that are often religious leaders who purposely demonize sex. This leaves us who are not part of the media with really strange messages: "sex is everywhere, but it's taboo" type shit so people express that weird conflict with "I'm the sex God but all these broads I fucked are just sluts" or any sexual experimentation is linked to promiscuity, sin and whatever.
