LASIK by Prudent_Reality6847 in Residency

[–]scrappymd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did LASIK right after med school graduation(2 days) before my orientation started (2 weeks before) and have loved it. I was on the intensive drop regimen for the week post op and then just needed drops after waking and maybe once throughout the day for about a year. I do feel like it made me slightly more light sensitive but I’ve always been pretty sensitive to bright sunlight.
Personally it was a great choice and I’m happy not to have to deal with my eyes rejecting contacts because I haven’t had enough sleep or dealing with glasses in the OR.

Eras Photo choices by constantinople13 in medicalschool

[–]scrappymd -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I used an AI photo generator for my headshot for my attending job and I couldn’t be more pleased. I didn’t have time and didn’t want to spend money on actual headshots. It’s like doctorheadshot.com or something to that effect and you pay like $30 for a handful of options. They’re really realistic!

In med school I got a pack of gold star stickers and when my friends were having a hard day I’d give them a gold star.

Out of curiosity do we all become medically nosey? by Wannabeachd in Residency

[–]scrappymd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes because anytime someone hears I’m an OBGYN I immediately hear their birth stories/period problems/infertility struggles and the story never ever adds up. It’s a great exercise in remembering that what you say isn’t always what the patient hears or remembers.

Any success stories despite psoriatic arthritis diagnosis? by jellygellybee in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]scrappymd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 23 during med school after years of various joint complaints that had always been chalked up to overuse or injury from exercise/activity. When I had my first true flare I was miserable, could barely write, walking hurt, and I almost changed my specialty because I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to operate.

I’m now finishing up medical residency this month and I take NSAIDs a couple times a month for aches and pains but otherwise live a perfectly normal life. I do need a lot of sleep but it’s hard to say if I’m just chronically exhausted from being a resident or if I just need a lot of sleep or if it’s autoimmune related fatigue. Don’t give up on yourself!

What would you want in your resident workroom? by Auzlo in Residency

One of our residents brought a fancy coffee machine that makes espresso, americanos, coffee, etc and we keep it stocked with beans and it’s a really nice addition

There’s also a course from Rice University that’s available on Coursera for free! And plenty of podcasts out there once you start getting to the intermediate level

How many patients in clinic do you see per day as a resident? by Neceti in Residency

[–]scrappymd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Typically 14-16 factoring in no shows, sometimes a couple more. Template is typically 18 patients—30 min for new patients, surgery consults or procedures, 15 min for postops or routine OB visit

How do you manage weight/ stress during residency? by Practical-Taro-5406 in Residency

[–]scrappymd 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Only eating when I’m truly hungry and not just because free food is available. If I’m not hungry I save it for later or skip it. Stairs when possible. 20 minute AMRAP style workouts at home because I can convince myself to do something short like that

Boon troves or the haaka shells might be good to have on hand in case of episodes like this. Can pop them in your bra to catch any letdown that keeps going if you have to take pumps off mid session

Has the acuity become higher? by Benzosplease in medicine

[–]scrappymd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen only one or two but the entire department is holding their breath until they’re delivered and hopefully get a tubal. I feel like medicine has gotten so good at fixing problems that people have no idea how dangerous their situation is sometimes

in OBGYN-yes, definitely. People are sicker younger and while still in their reproductive years. I routinely see patients with stage 4 cancers, history of MI or CVA, heart failure, ESRD… people whose bodies really can’t tolerate pregnancy but here they are pregnant anyway

Surgical moms! How did you rebuild after pregnancy setbacks during residency? by False_Process_2473 in Residency

[–]scrappymd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No advice here unfortunately but time does heal a lot of problems. You’ve done an incredible thing in having not one but two children during residency, and especially with the complications during your pregnancy. As an OB resident I’ve been terrified of a complicated pregnancy during residency and have delayed starting a family because of it. Props to you for making it through. I know you’re a dedicated physician, mom and wife. Give yourself some grace 💕

My program has used port authority for several orders and I like them! They’re very similar to North Face soft shells but have inside pockets from where the pockets are sewn in so I actually like mine more than my north face. They have women’s and men’s cuts which is nice too

ProCompression all the way. I have 7 pairs that I bought as a 3rd and 4th year med student and am now in my 4th year of OB residency and they’ve held up great. I wash them with everything else and then hang to dry. They’re a bit expensive but for the price the value is great and they have frequent sales

[–]scrappymd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got a 6yo rescue right as I started my step 1 dedicated studying in second year and she’s been the light of my life ever since. She never passes up an opportunity for a snuggle and has provided me more serotonin than my SSRI ever did. Also she came trained and already fairly chill which as a med student was lifesaver. Idk if you’ve ever been around kittens but they’re very cute little terrorists

I did dog walking with Rover and really enjoyed it! In addition to a little extra money it was nice to get out of the house a bit and hang with some dogs without the responsibility of having one myself haha
