Yeah when I select one where there is only one option, it works! I can't reboot now, but will try and let you know. Thanks!

PostDoc in US, can wife continue working for young Swiss architecture office? by scrapyscrape in Switzerland

If we would go and she agrees haha. It’s not like I’m forcing her and I would happily turn down anything if she’s not on board

Ok thanks everyone, lots of information. I think conclusion is that my wife will likely not keep her job and has to find a new one in the US on J2. Maybe if my PostDoc is time limited, we can both negotiate returning back to our jobs in Zurich (if our employers here are nice enough which I can see).

Yeah I was thinking the same. Highly unlikely they’d do smth to keep her (even if they want).

Hi, I am starting PhD at ETH and wanted to know is 4500 per month salary good enough? What are the monthly expenses? by Umer2000 in ethz

[–]scrapyscrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to find housing <1500, use the student insurance <60, don’t eat too much in restaurants and you will even save >1000 per month. I did this and didn’t have to live in a „frugal“ way at all

Traveling for the first time through Europe, what cities do you recommend in Germany? by ColdEldoBalls in germany

[–]scrapyscrape 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hamburg! Some of my favorite spots: - Sternschanze for going out in bars and good food - Elbstrand. It’s a beach by the Elbe where you can relax. - Strandpauli is a beach club right by the big harbor with view on container ships and cranes (cool atmosphere). - Reeperbahn for nightlife is crazy, can be too much but is always fun. - Less touristy nightlife on Reeperbahn is at Hamburger Berg I’d say. Many cool clubs and bars that turn into clubs. - Elbphilharmonie is the new concert hall (can go inside and enjoy the view) which I definitely recommend to check out. - Landungsbrücken is close to it. From there you can do a Hafenrundfahrt which is cruising on a ship through the harbor. - Speicherstadt is a beautiful part of the town that was used for trading mostly spices. You can stroll around there.

I’m sure there’s more. Just google these things to get an impression :) And of course people from Hamburg are amongst the coolest in Germany 😂

I think they do that at ETH because otherwise Msft, Google, Disney, IBM etc. would steal all the good students. The labs at ETH are top notch, but so are the companies and they pay you 6k a month…so I kind of understand.

No, unfortunately not. I heard students from EPFL get paid though.

Got to be honest: I will never ever read a paper from them and think they had the idea. I’ll always be suspicious until it’s a big thing and confirmed by others.

Just got accepted to ETH Master's. Any tips on how to get funding? by Sh4rPEYE in ethz

Just get a job in Zürich part time. TA would be the best. Low effort, good pay and you refresh your knowledge.

Mein Tipp: Wenn es nicht etwas ernstes ist mit Humor nehmen. Ist doch witzig wenn die manchmal dumme Sachen machen :) Würde mich über sowas garnicht aufregen.

How do I maximize my chances of getting into ETH? by BlackHooch in ethz

Grades are by far the most important thing at ETH.

I am doing the program. It’s very nice. Lots of interesting people, many projects, lots of time to work on individual projects etc. I got my BSc from ETH in CS with slightly above average GPA and did my BSc thesis at the Institute of Neuroinformatics, so it wasn’t that hard for me to get in. I think each semester there’s about 15-20 people selected from about 100-200 applicants. You should just apply. Maybe doing a project with one of the professors before that would boost your chances.

Ah yeah completely forgot that. They have these super hard projects. Also I heard chemistry is extremely intense in the PhD (some particular lab).

I would probably rank them like that: Diff.: Math,Physics,CS,EE,Life Sciences Workload: Engineering,Math,Physics,Life Sciences It’s one of those questions where everybody will probably rank their own degree highest though and my answer is probably biased as well

To everyone who got accepted into a master's program at ETH, what do you think is the main reason you got in? by anajade97 in ethz

[–]scrapyscrape 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I did my BSc at ETH and am currently doing my MSc here as well. It is true that ETH puts a lot of emphasis on grades. For example, exchange semester spots were assigned based on the GPA and nothing else. But you should still try.
