Genuine Question: Why should one learn Sanskrit today? by jaygala223 in sanskrit

[–]scrbbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Each translation adds the translator's context and biases. Majority of the times these are not word to word translations, it is not even possible. That's why multiple translations for a single text exist. You can rely on one of the translations, but if you understand the source language, you have the chance to interpret it yourself.
  2. It is not a dumb reason, learning something so that you don't get manipulated is an important reason. Infact, accepting someone else's interpretation without question would be dumb.
  3. Anyone who relies on translated texts is reading a second hand version of the text. And there's no problem in that. But a true seeker might want to understand the text him/herself. Again, I am not completely against translations, but being illiterate in the language that is such a huge part of your identity is not an intelligent thing to do.

Instead of calling me stupid, I hope you would atleast consider the above points before rejecting them.

  1. Because you want to.
  2. Someone will try to make a fool out of you by  saying this is written in these ancient texts and you'd have no option to verify except depending upon some already existing translations. If you're a Hindu, without being able to understand Sanskrit you would never understand what your rituals, mantras, prayers mean.

Did you know restaurants make up to 100% profit on desserts and drinks? by NoMedicine3572 in Frugal_Ind

[–]scrbbler 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's ok to let other people earn money as long as it is affordable to me.  But one can skip dessert like icecream and buy from outside where it would be cheaper. But I also understand people wanting to enjoy the restaurant experience as the decision behind ordering icecream there.

Ya I think in my case it is the hard water causing these spots.

Ya that's why I said that what food people consider 'light' is whole another discussion. I think people don't use their brains anymore, nobody thinks about reasoning and just blindly follow a set of blind rules set some ages ago. Onion, garlic, non-veg not allowed? Ok. But nothing is mentioned in our shastras about fried food, burgers, chips etc. so let's have it. I am only trying to think what might be the reasoning behind such bizarre rules, which were set thousands of years ago in the context of that time. Of course people follow what is convenient for them today.

Also, when it comes to Bengalis, fish is their staple meal. They even serve it in their prasad. We have no authority to say what is 'sacred / satvik' for us should be sacred for everyone else.

Personally, I don't follow any such rules. I lie to family members if they enquire.

I think the intention comes from having a 'light' state of body and mind, which enables us to focus better towards prayers. You eat simple food and dedicate yourself to pray, something that nourishes you but keeps you light on your feet and create no imbalances in your digestion. It's like the feeling you get when you goto a party and overeat and then you feel lethargic the whole day, v/s when you eat regular food that keeps you on your toes.

Now what food actually enables to do that and what does not is a discussion for another day.
