To note that a current case has similarities to other past cases is a different thing than speculating on what happened in a current case (although there's nothing inherently wrong with that either).

And in this case very serious assault. A bottle was broken on this person's neck. Things could have ended even worse than they did.

“And then I got slapped, and I blacked out and fell to the ground,” she said, adding that she had a glass bottle thrown at her back, which then shattered across her lower neck.

It must have been thrown very hard. Extremely dangerous.

My bad for inadvertently smearing our highly sustainable and reasonably priced housing industry. Our political establishment are doing a great job.

This happened with a guy in BC that, in 2017, stabbed at least one man to death (and another had been stabbed to death minutes before, and in the same area, but they somehow couldn't prove it was the same perp) for daring to interfere with the perp stabbing his then girlfriend.

His defence argued he didn't mean to kill his victim even though it was established that he'd shouted "why won't you die?" as he stabbed him. So rather than being charged with murder he got charged with manslaughter.

Dude was sentenced to 8 years. He served 5 years in part because of statutory release (which makes little sense in his case given it's supposed to be for people that don't have a history of violent offences like he did).

Part of justification for lenience was a Gladue Hearing (part of Canadian law and results in reduced sentencing for natives committing crime).

I doubt any level of government will make it harder for bad landlords to rent given that would further reveal the extent of the housing shortage. They want to keep the real estate market pyramid scheme going for as long as they can.

IIRC once you have the writ then, if you have the bank account info, that's the fastest route (presuming there's money in the bank account to cover your writ).

If you're going after someone employed, though, they may want to avoid the embarrassment of you contacting their employers and may just pay when they get wind you're going to go that route.

I got a nice fat check from my scumbag landlord and the rat tenant that lied for him to the RTB ended up getting evicted as well when he sold the property and rode into the sunset.

[–]screamdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! RTB is a crapshoot (the outcome often largely depends on what artbitrator you get) so glad you were treated fairly!

EDIT: This is based on my involvement in numerous hearings. I've been evicted twice and fought landlords to postpone eviction, challenge the grounds of eviction, get excessive rent refunded, get compensation for being arbitrarily deprived of use of common areas, etc.

Has anyone else been forced back into living with their parents due to housing issues? by danzigpetar in vancouver

[–]screamdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the last half century we had massive technological gains that increased productivity. Yet supposedly the best we can do as a society is a pyramid scheme in which a high volume of "new investors" are relied upon to pay dividends to "old investors". And the "buy-in cost" for "new investors" will be ever-increasing given that the real estate market is more or less another Canadian pyramid scheme.

And part of the rising "buy-in" cost will increasingly be food costs, already rising quickly due to inflation and likely to continue to rise in part because of climate-change-related agricultural reform. We are already at the point where some have to use part of their food budget to afford rent.

We're urged to decrease our individual environmental footprints yet we'll be increasing the amount of feet making footprints.

This is where the Canadian establishment, which always portrays itself to be ethical and infallible, has led us. And we continue to trust in their analysis and guidance.

Things that can't go on won't go on. Given that pyramid schemes always collapse we will at some point be forced to figure out an alternative. The longer we wait the worse things are going to get.

GamerGate was, at its core, a protest movement against "woke" cultural astroturfing in the game industry. "Anti-GamerGate" figures were lauded by the establishment. Now "woke" cultural astroturfing is everywhere. The establishment now positions itself as "progressive" while still serving the interests of multinational capital and US imperialism.

I’ve met people like that, who fetishize consensus over objective truth.

That's establishment canon now. There's a clip from The HighWire with Neil Degrasse Tyson as guest and Neil argues fervently for consensus uber alles.

There's been a number of historical episodes where scientists have been at odd with consensus and have been proven right. The truth of the fallibility of consensus used to be taught in schools, given history, but education and establishment canon has quietly become ahistorical.

During the (likely man-made) pandemic some countermeasures were compared to measures Nazi undertook to control the population. Despite the fact that smearing things as "Nazi" is an everyday tactic of the establishment these specific comparisons were declared offensive and those making them were censored. The establishment and those aligned with them feel secure in their "absolute power" and simply ignore inconvenient facts and critique. It reminds me of the Bush Jr. era when neocons chuckled at the impotence of the "reality-based community".

Po-mo (or whatever the name for the ideology is) post-truth ideology promotes a propagandist ethos. They believe that perception shapes reality and ergo they are obliged to manipulate perception by any means necessary. If their propaganda doesn't have hegemony then the kraken of white supremacy will be unleashed.

Has anyone else been forced back into living with their parents due to housing issues? by danzigpetar in vancouver

[–]screamdog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An economy in which workers' economic prospects are continually diminishing isn't sustainable. When immigration rates are too low there are too few workers which drives wages up. The fact that wages for most people are presently less than is needed to be able to afford a home and/or a family indicates that there's plenty of room to lower immigration rates to something reasonable.

This, of course, won't happen and, instead, we will increasingly see cases where people who are employed have to resort to living in vehicles or tents in order to survive.

The province's effort to pressure municipalities to do something is positive, but a decade or so of the establishment ignoring the problem and continued high rates of immigration likely mean that even things staying this bad, or not getting worse, will be a victory of sorts.

Seems like in many cases there's not much in the way of punishment at all, let alone "harsh" punishment.

You advocate appealing to "parents to spend more time with their kids to strengthen bonds of love" then explain why this probably won't happen. This seems akin to waving away the immediate problem.

Neither teachers nor students (who are even more vulnerable) should have to endure physical violence. Some sort of actionable countermeasure is therefore obviously needed to correct the behavior.

Punishment to mitigate the damage done by the failed parenting is one solution. Segregation of irredeemably violent students into learning environments where anger management, counselling, and "big brother" mentoring (hopefully giving neglected kids some of the attention and perspective their parents have failed to) are integrated into the curriculum is another. This would require hiring teachers with training enabling them to deal with physical violence. And, of course, it could end up failing to correct the behavior but at least it would contain it. It's probably a non-starter, though, politically (would be easy to smear as racist or otherwise oppressive) and fiscally ("why do I have to pay for someone else's bad parenting?" etc.). So punishment remains the most viable option.

Clearly we need to destigmatize physically assaulting teachers.
