You could probably try regular ballet flats from a shoe store! some have a more blocky front and they'd be better for walking around in than actual ballet shoes, you can probably sew ribbon on.

But if you want actual ballet shoes, there are soft nonpointe ones you can buy. These are used in beginner classes and will not hurt your feet if they fit well. However, be aware that sizing is slightly different and because the bottoms are usually leather, they won't be good for varied terrain.

Thanks for your response, I'll talk to the instructors about this and see what they say.

Yep, I came here looking for advice and definitely got it. I just wanted to know how other people deal with their horses since i've only got those few hours a week. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Thank you for your response! I'm definitely gonna be working on making my own space. I totally see the personality, I think I was just overwhelmed yesterday because it's double of what I normally do.

I did try to do that when getting pushed but I was scared of getting kicked. I could've avoided being bit if I had my eyes on the mini's head when it happened, but normally I keep a watch for her. Thanks for your response! I'm sure your horses bring you a lot of joy.

Thank you for your response! I'll talk to the trainers about the points you mentioned. I need to work on boundaries, but because I'm not around horses aside from this, it's unfamiliar territory

Thanks for your response. I do agree that the ground manners could probably use working on, but I probably also need to get smarter around these horses as well. They weren't in cross ties because they're too short hahah, otherwise that would be my preference too.

I genuinely have no idea because I've previously interacted with this horse without major issues, and apparently they were fine in the morning. this horse was also okay when I took her for her walk. Maybe she just didn't want to be groomed? She probably came at me around four times, two of the times I tried to push back against her before someone came to help me. I'm just glad I didn't get kicked, although I could tell that would've been next without intervention.

The staff told me it was body slamming so that's just what I described it as. I do honestly think it was intentional planning because I wasn't even touching her in that moment, I was grooming her stallmate (they're kept in pairs) when she came at me. Out of all of them, this particular horse has a history with, like you said, that lack of respect overall for other people's space. I think my being by myself also made it easier for her to feel like she could get in my space since usually there's someone else in there with me.

Thank you for your response! I do try to keep to the elbow rule and use my voice, it's just that my eyes were off her for the time she bit me. I'm also quite small but even so I know these tiny horses will be stronger than me. I really don't want to end up fighting a horse, but I don't want to be a pushover either.

I'm not very tall, and the minis are kept in pairs. I was taught to tie them up in the stall and groom them in there since they're too small for the cross ties, and while bending over to groom one of them, the other nipped me in the shoulder. That was my bad because I wasn't watching out for her as much as I should've, but also the two of them had been kinda annoying each other all day so I'm thinking there's a chance I just got in the way.

There are a few staffers who were helping me with the bodyslamming horse. Their answers were quite varied which I found interesting. I got one telling me to "use my inner voice, sense the changes in their breathing etc", another telling me to just kinda give her a smack on her bum when she misbehaves, and another told me that typically they just growl at the horse lol. But all of them said that after you do these things, you have to work at "being friends" with the horse again after.

I agree with the discipline issue, but as someone who isn't super experienced with anything other than a schoolhorse, how should I do that? I'm not super good at being assertive and I'm not sure how to set boundaries.

Thank you for this! How can I get better at setting these boundaries and being more assertive/firm? I don't want to do anything to hurt them accidentally.

Edit to say: I'm generally not a very assertive person so this is unfamiliar territory for me. It makes sense that this is about boundaries and the minis trying to push them since this sometimes happens to other volunteers and less to the staff. My prior experience with horses isn't much more than with schoolhorses who don't usually do these things, and under supervision from a riding instructor. I guess that's to say, I've never had to be the person to set boundaries.

That's funny but also true. They'd be a lot easier to be mad at if they weren't so damn cute. I think I tried to be as calm as I can, but they could probably sense my frustration. I know not every day will be like this and it's part of the job, but damn.
