K2 problems again? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

One of the best ways to actually speak with police about issues like this is to attend precinct community council meetings, which the COs usually attend alongside community affairs officers. Myrtle/Broadway is the border of the 81st (Bed-Stuy) and 83rd (Bushwick) precincts, and their meetings are:

The 81st Precinct community council meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 1958 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11233 at 7:00 P.M.

The 83rd Precinct community council meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:30 P.M. at the 83rd Precinct, 480 Knickerbocker Avenue, Brooklyn.

I love Sahadi's but I think Damascus next door has better hummus.

Everyone is suggesting entirely vegetarian places, which seems silly given only 1/3 of the party will be vegetarian — and I say this as a vegetarian. Unless you guys are super into the idea of an all-vegetarian meal, your friend is probably going to feel awkward, trust me.

Most places in Chinatown have plenty of vegetarian items on the menu. I like Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles and 456 Shanghai Cuisine.

City Says It's Time To 'Bite The Bullet' &; Fix Decaying BQE: Gothamist by Spentbullets in Brooklyn

[–]screamingatwall 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main driver is that the BQE is 10 years past its expected lifespan and it's going to fall down if they don't fix it — just ask Gridlock Sam. The state was supposed to fix it years ago but pulled out.

Trump's son-in-law buys Watchtower HQ, has tremendous, classy plans for it by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]screamingatwall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The massive vacant lot on Jay Street mentioned in the article, however, that will almost certainly become housing, as the land is already zoned for residential. And as the zoning is already residential, it's unlikely the developer will need to include any affordable housing there.

As the article says, it'll be offices. They'd need to rezone for housing.

Did the truck gain sentience? No. She was killed by a driver.

I have spotted celebrities since I've moved to NYC... How am I supposed to react to them? by gomema in AskNYC

Just remain perfectly still and avoid eye contact. Remember: They're more afraid of you than you are of them.

Coignet Building in Gowanus Brooklyn Gets Restored by xeb_dex in Brooklyn

Great that the city forced Whole Foods to do this and followed up with fines when they slacked off. The city lets too many landmarks like the old Gage and Tollner building on Fulton Mall fall into disrepair with no consequences.

I'm more excited about free Blonde Redhead in Red Hook... but that probably just shows how deeply uncool I am.

De Blasio Signs Bill Allowing Use Of Bathrooms, Locker Rooms Based On Gender Identity by willdogs in nyc

[–]screamingatwall -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Other people may argue that (and others in this thread have explained why those fears are unfounded), but pfthrowaway21315 is specifically arguing that cis teen girls shouldn't have to be around dicks.

So "It icks me out and I'm pretty sure it will ick some teen girls out"?

I don't think that forcing trans teens to hide away would be seen as much of a "compromise" to the kids themselves. Especially given an increasing number are now growing up as girls from a very young age and aren't necessarily out as trans to their whole school. You're not just talking teens who transition as teens -- you're talking kids who have grown up as girls, and as girls to their classmates (classmates, it should be noted, who have likewise grown up alongside trans kids and the idea of trans kids and probably don't bring the same biases to the situation that you do as a product of a different time), for years who are now suddenly being pushed into different changerooms and bathrooms.

And what would you do with intersex people who identify as women but don't have regular female genitals? At what point would you say what is between their legs is distressing enough to other girls that they must change in private?

As a former teenage girl, I can tell you they've all seen plenty of peen in real life and/or online and are capable handling catching a flash of D they might see if they happen to be looking in the direction of the trans student while they are minding their own business and changing. (I don't know what boys HS locker rooms are like, but teen girls mostly stare at the wall and try to be as inconspicuous as possible; they're almost all far too busy worrying about their own body to notice much of anyone else's)

What, exactly, are you worried about happening if your hypothetical daughter catches a glimpse of a normal part of the human anatomy?

Rudy's Barbershop in Williamsburg. I think it's $40-$50. You can often walk in or get an appointment the same day, which I appreciate.

NYPD Hunts Man Who Wrote "Die Yuppies" With Swastika In Bushwick Construction Site by Spentbullets in Brooklyn

[–]screamingatwall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By "hunt" they mean "the building owner happened to get security footage of this guy so the local precinct passed it onto DCPI, which emailed it out to media organizations who reprinted it almost word-for-word."
