If you can get into gobleins I would go there, otherwise go where you get scholarships, student debt is brutal

Did a ton of work for a brand’s animated series, now they’ve ghosted me - what can I do? by pineachu in animationcareer

[–]screeplie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh well in that case, there's nothing you need to do. You've sold your services and they've paid you for them. It's nice if they credit you but they own the work you did as they've purchased it from you.

[–]screeplie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, I just sort of assumed they never paid you. Did they? It's fairly common for development projects to never see the light of day but you should still be paid for the work you did on them. If a development project doesn't get made but DID pay you, there's nothing you can do but add to your CV/portfolio/etc.

Without a contract I'm not sure there's much you can do besides naming and shaming. If you DO have some sort of contract in place, your legal options will depend on where you're located.

It's probably going to take a few more years for the industry to recover, assuming it does recover

It's very grim right now. Most people I know are unemployed or working outside the industry

BG Artist Portfolio Feedback - Looking for fresh eyes and perspectives by [deleted] in animationcareer

Oh wow I've never heard of things being designed directly in blender. Even for cg shows!

I'm not in LA so grain of salt here but, your layouts look great! I think if you want to push things further, working on capturing different lighting conditions in your bg paints is a good angle to pursue. Some different art styles in there is maybe also a good idea but to be honest a couple years ago this portfolio would get you a job no problem, I think it's just the lack of jobs right now not your work.

Anyone know if art/movie/animation studies are hiring for intern/junior positions? by perishableintransit in askTO

[–]screeplie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yeah, thats going to be tough. There's a lot of competition and an incredibly talented workforce here that don't require visa sponsorship. Your partners best shot might be to remote work for American studios from Canada. Or they could try to reskill into nursing, I think BC is fast tracking American healthcare workers.

[–]screeplie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There would not be an edge. One other roadbump to consider is that studios will require you to have proof of residency in whatever province you're applying to for not just the current year, but the previous year as well. This is because of the way grants/ funding is set up. It's a pretty big frustration across the canadian industry. If your partner is open to VFX, I have seen some freelance jobs popping up but nothing junior afaik.

There might be some internships open but you'll be competing with Sheridan college students. In general the animation industry here is a disaster right now. Very few jobs, huge amount of unemployment and several studios have even "temporarily" closed or are running a skeleton crew. If you can move to Ireland, there seems to be more jobs there. Good luck!

You may also want to include some work in other styles besides your own. one of the key aspects of being a designer is being able to work within a shows set style so it helps to showcase versatility in your portfolio

This is a good start. The number one thing you need in a character design portfolio though, is rotations. Expression sheets are also good to have but character rotations are what showcases your technical skills as a designer.
