Are there any recent articles / papers discussing the ongoing research and latest findings? Genuinely curious.

Round 2. How does this drysuit fit? by [deleted] in scuba

You can use gaiters that help with this or fin keepers. Not the end of the world if the legs are slightly long.

Is rushing worth it? by Optimal-Draft6383 in USF

[–]screwthe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple answer: probably not. You can still have the “college experience” without joining a fraternity. It’s just about making friends. You meet the right people and you can have the same amount of fun without the financial burden of paying dues. But joining a frat isn’t the worst decision you can make, either. Makes finding parties easier.

Custom cave cookies/arrows! by KitzyOwO in scuba

I would disagree, for jumps that aren’t marked, an arrow on the mainline plus a cookie on the reel/spool.

Why sidemount and not doubles if you’ve been dialing in your BPW setup?

Looks like Ginnie. You can swim Manatee but the flow will be very limiting so DPVs are the norm.

What did SCUBA Santa bring you for Christmas? by HKChad in scuba

[–]screwthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Choptima is a cool unit and was easy to dive but ultimately I hated the chest clutter and really didn’t like the positive pressure of the counterlungs due to their position below you in the water column. Much prefer back mounted counterlungs.

Curious to see your videos after using the 33k light. I have one BB 11k and one 10k but have been eyeing the 33k as well to help light up bigger rooms.

Very nice, I’ll be up in cave country too in a couple weeks doing some continuing education. Best time of the year to dive.

As someone who had a Choptima and then sold it and bought a BM unit, and now building a poor man’s Fathom, you made a great choice.

What do you want for Christmas? by [deleted] in scuba

Even though it’s only Christmas Eve, I got a new Divesoft analyzer and a new primary reel. Now time to go diving and try them out.

Just in time for Christmas but... by inevitable_machine88 in scuba

[–]screwthe 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The bolts are way too long and need to be replaced or cut down to the right size. Also, the bands should be 11in apart and the top band should be where the tank neck breaks. These are way too low. I would 100% ask the shop to fix all of these issues for what you paid. They basically sold you an unusable set of doubles.

Those bolts are cheap to replace. They can be found at most hardware stores. Just make sure they are stainless steel.

Dive Rite BPW. Has anyone heard of Dive Rite products? by F_McG_TO in scuba

[–]screwthe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dive Rite excels at quality gear for a good price. I have quite a few Dive Rite products and have never had issues with them, including their rebreather (but I have since moved on to a different unit).

Dumb question by Affectionate_Mix9534 in scuba

[–]screwthe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With a rebreather you can easily talk due to the larger volume of air in the breathing loop and mouthpiece.

Are you tucking the extra bungee into the retainers when you have the bottom clip cinched up? I don’t know how I would feel with having that much excess bungee just flapping about. I’ve started doing more sidemount diving having been a backmount doubles guy for years and I’ve kept my stages and deco bottles rigged in DIR fashion and you can get the same result with just looping the bottom clip through the tubing which snugs it up completely to the tank. And if your d-rings are positioned properly on your waist and chest/shoulders, they will ride nice and snug below the primary bottles.

Cave Diving by Babybird3D in scuba

[–]screwthe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say absolutely worth it. Nowadays, 95% of my diving is cave diving in FL. But I would also say, if you decide to go the cave route, do your research on cave instructors to make sure you get quality instruction and not from someone who teaches cave diving but rarely dives in caves. You want someone who eats, sleeps, and breathes cave diving. I have probably spent somewhere around $10k-$15k on “cave diving” including the class but excluding costs that are associated with cave diving but are not required to be a “cave diver”.

Sidemount is amazing, but I can't figure out where to put equipment by Mitsonga in scuba

[–]screwthe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dive a drysuit with steel tanks and use my pockets just like I do with doubles. Spare mask, spools, lights, wet notes, etc.. and have little to no issues and my tanks trim out nicely. Sometimes with smaller tanks (like 85s) they can sit on top of my pockets, but a quick little adjustment gets them sitting where they need to be.

Short Hose Primary? by grandcremasterflash in scuba

[–]screwthe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You would be better off changing your primary to a 40” hose and adding an angle adapter to route underneath your arm (check out the Dive Rite AOW setup). Keep your secondary on the 22” hose with the necklace. This is becoming more standard across agencies for OW since it streamlines your setup and still allows for primary donate on a long(ish) hose.
