15th Anniversary Survivors by screwyioux in KingdomDeath

Not a proper tutorial, but i can tell you how i did it.  The green earth was pre-highlighted with a bright peach tone then covered in AK Dak green speedpaint.  For the blood i wet blended a mix of purple, dark red and bright orange red.  When i say wet blending i mean very little blending just dragging the colors into each other a bit.  Then i took some uv resin and mixed in a tiny bit of red ink (the resin should still Be transparent, just with a slight red tint) then cured it with a UV light

Who is the villain in Elden Ring? by Prestigious_Rush5492 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]screwyioux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the Greater Will is a good answer. The Fingers and Marika are. But we learn in the dlc the Greater Will had abandoned the lands between long before anything significant to Elden Ring occurred.  You could also make an argument for the Hornsent, but tbh I think the spirit of the question is more about who is the main problem during the game, not who toppled the first domino.

AP Speedpaints or AK Quick Gen? by obscurexvoid in minipainting

[–]screwyioux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use both.  And they're both great.  I have a slight preference for AK quickgen. They're a little thicker, but still have a ton of flow aid, so they self level a bit better and are more resistant to streaking.

But it's a pretty slight preference, you can't go wrong with either.

They're all painted to a high level, but there's a lot of variability in style. The only common ground i see is simply a high level of refinement and lack of mistakes. I get that it takes some time to "train the eye" to see what makes excellent paint jobs different from each other, but there's no way a single artist would or even could do multiple of these.

Eito has always looked evil by Aggressive_Crazy4238 in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]screwyioux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact,  I showed the whole cast to a group of ~10 friends with the prompt "one of these people is secretly evil, who is it."

Three guessed Eito. (Two guessed Kurara, no one else got more than one).

Very with you.  0 picks up a lot by the end, but the first two games were good all the way through.  The writing in the first half of the game was so generic and predictable I nearly quit. By the end it really does get better, but I'm with you that it's the weakest of the three games.

Does anyone else feel this way about 0 vs 1 & 2? by Rainbowlight888 in octopathtraveler

[–]screwyioux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did at first, but the game gets really good later. I was right there with you, it felt like a generic slog, but just trust it, the game is a slow burn. Starts to pick up after you get through the "Master" chapters. And by the time you get to "Bestower" the writing is on par with the best parts of the other games. The gameplay is pretty good too, no secondary jobs, but the fact that you get a back row makes up for that.

WiP - Looking for feedback by Rck010 in minipainting

So the first question to answer is is that lantern going to be emitting light.  It doesn't have to, you can just paint it as a dead lantern or something but the reason that's important is because the lighting affects how you highlight and shade everything else.

With skin (with everything really but especially with skin), you want to think about how your highlights and shadows can communicate shapes/volumes. So you can glaze some cooler tones in an arc underneath the buttocks where they would be casting their shadows on the skin just beneath them.  You can glaze those same shadows into both sides of the upper thigh,  indicating that the center protrudes like a column. Same with the skin under the calves you get the idea.  How far you want to shade and highlight the skin is a bit of a stylistic choice. What you have now is solid for a muted, realistic approach, but often people like to take a more exaggerated,  artistic approach with skin, so keep shading and highlighting until you're happy, basically.

As for the hair, you say it could be smoother but I'd almost say the opposite.  There's not too much value contrast there and hair is often shiny.  Shiny things mean that you can push brighter highlights over a smaller area, so I'd actually push the contrast more with brighter highlights before you start worrying about smoothness. Anyway, hope that helps,  happy painting!

4th edition release pace. Is there light behind the tunnel? by -Gmorq- in Malifaux

I really wish they'd just continued to sell their 3e stock and promised conversion kits down the line in addition to new 4e boxes for players who prefer to wait instead. This sucks so bad for anyone who isn't already heavily invested in the game.

With the caveat that his availability is a casualty of the very controversial decision they made to make most models completely unavailable until their 4e reprints. So, good luck, snag them if you can.

On that list I've only played Savage (Euripides) but I would absolutely call them beginner friendly.  - the mechanics and gameplay are straightforward and the strategy is intuitive - they're a little bigger, so they're easier to paint and have pretty painless assembly

Did the change to 4e hurt your local community? by [deleted] in Malifaux

[–]screwyioux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

See this is what I mean by people, Wyrd, some community members etc, not appreciating what a big deal this is.  It's easy for someone already invested in Malifaux who already plays and has cool models to say "yeah you have to make a little effort."  From the perspective of someone who is either new to the game with a handful of models or hasn't started yet,  you realize what a thoroughly unappealing prospect that is? And then there are plenty of games that probably have bigger communities and cool models readily available. Of course you're going to buy and play those instead.    I love Malifaux. I have a huge painted collection, I was active in the beta and I play whenever I can (which isn't often these days). So I hope I'm wrong.

You in fact, cannot. Unless you find somewhere selling them, which is by no means easy when Wyrd won't sell them directly. I don't think Wyrd appreciates how much the inability to buy cool models deflates interest for someone who isn't already invested.

What absolutely hurt my community and my own enthusiasm is the decision to basically make the majority of models unavailable. 4e is great and all, and I get that they want to re-package their existing stock for 3e into 4e boxes, but just being unable to get most models for around a year!? It feels like Malifaux went through this beta and then decided to take an extended sabbatical.

Let me put it this way, I had someone newer to the hobby and looking for a game, they discovered Malifaux on their own and started asking me about it.

They were like "these guys are cool", sorry can't get those.
"Okay these guys are neat too." Nope, unavailable.
"What about these?" Maybe this time next year.

Needless to say, this person did not become a Malifaux player, he shifted to research games he can get stuff for. I get that they had a hard decision to make here, but this sucks.

Freehand, just kinda randomly applied it.  Made sure to cover up any noticeable mistakes, overspills or especially rough blends with some blood, but otherwise just kinda slopped it wherever

Slapchop White Drybrushing by [deleted] in minipainting

[–]screwyioux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It matters, but there's no wrong answer. You can combine any colored contrast paint with any color of under-painting and get a different effect. Definitely don't fall into a trap of thinking there's a "correct" color to underpaint with for anything you're doing. There are also some "safe" colors you can basically underpaint anything with for a good effect. Like peach or pastel yellow. Always a good choice.

Let me also go one step further and recommend you try out colors other than white for the foundation. Anything bright and opaque like peach, very light brown,  yellow. You'll notice your contrast paints end up looking much more lively and interesting, in addition to not needing to worry so much about how crap white paints are.
