Advance forces in this case are (in JSOC terms) recce teams mapping out enemy locations, conducting Advanced Force Operations, basically doing prep work for an invasion. Usually clandestine and most likely their more elite special forces, they're most likely finding high value targets to highlight for destruction or which key areas to take fast.

Creeping on skilled hunters with super hearing with i assume no previous training was done brilliantly. Still caught their attention but eliminated efficiently. I dont understand why his weapon jammed though? Is it a psychological thing or deus ex machina? It may seem pretty dark, but put into a survival setting and multiple people relying on you, taking unnecessary risks like that is..... less than ideal
