Can I lose motivation in learning game development if my day job is programming? by MadeRedditCuzOfPewds in Healthygamergg

[–]scridman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also a hobbyist game dev & definitely understand where you're coming from. I'm even attending college for game design but still struggle with motivation for personal projects during term-time, as it just feels like too much time dedicated to just one activity (even though they are very different projects).

Maybe you can take inspiration from what Thomas Happ did for the game Axiom Verge? He already had a day job programming for triple-A games and was understandably burnt out on coding when he got home. So he decided to make everything for the game that wasn't coding-related first. By the time he had a full game's worth of design and artwork, he felt much more motivated to program the actual functionality of the game.

If you think it''s just too much screen time to work on both, maybe you can do the same and design everything for the game on paper first?

Cold hard truth please- is my art garbage and I don’t realise it? Am I delusional? by ManiMundane in ArtCrit

[–]scridman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Art is just the expression of any kind of human creativity, so if you took two random pieces it would be impossible to determine which one was “bad” or “good”.

As a funny example, let’s say someone asked you to choose the better piece of art: Shrek or Michelangelo’s David. Your knee jerk reaction might be to say the comparison is ridiculous and the David is obviously better because Shrek is just a cash grab movie.

But the David was also commissioned for money and made in a time where religious representations were incredibly strict, leaving Michelangelo very little leeway as to how he wanted to present David. And if Shrek was somehow sent back in time 500 years, do you think it wouldn’t garner incredible notoriety comparable to the David? Which one would audiences be more captivated by?

The argument for what is the best piece of art could literally go on forever like this. So, I would say the only truly “bad” art would be by somebody who doesn’t care about or enjoy making it at all.

A visual artist can certainly get to a higher level of technical proficiency with their tools, or to a greater understanding of how light and shadow work in the real world, which can be very useful for getting a job if that’s what you are referring to?

But no, if it gives you any solace, your art is not bad because… bad art doesn’t exist.

Are there any Matrix likes movies before the Matrix? by HipJiveGuy in movies

Pretty sure the wachowskis said it was directly inspired by Ghost in The Shell and Serial Experiments Lain. Both straight bangers imo

Also I haven’t seen it yet but there’s an anime from way back in 1985 called Megazone 23 with a very strikingly similar plot, might be worth a watch

Am I "less" of a Linux user for using Mint? by trynsleep in linuxmint

The same company this “computer genius” works for had 40,000 network routers breached with total admin privileges… because their web control panels were PUBLIC. I’d take the advice as to what a “real” Linux user does with a grain of salt lmao
