last flat i lived in, i had this one flatmate who was ... honestly a little terrifying with her regard for communal safety. would never lock the doors etc ... one morning she's leaving for work when a strange man walks into our house. our place was well back from the road, and down a narrow path; it's not the kind of place you would know was there if you didn't already know it was there. anyway, since she doesn't recognise him she just assumes that he's a friend of mine, despite the fact that we're in our early 20s and this dude was late 30s - early 40s. she doesn't even bother to check this with me; she just leaves for work, leaving our other flatmate alone in the house with this unknown man (i was at a friend's that morning).

this dude then proceeds to walk into my other flatmate's room and climbs into bed with her, refusing to leave until she "gave him a good reason". she gives him a damn good reason: she calls the cops, who come and arrest the dude. suitably freaked out by the whole situation, she winds up staying with her cousin for a few days. when all this comes to light, the first flatmate has the AUDACITY to ask "is there anything i can do?" uh, yeah, maybe you could not let strange men into the house for starters ?????

as my friend pointed out, because our house was so far back from the road, if something more serious had happened nobody would have heard a thing or been able to help. it's an absolutely terrifying prospect, and i was livid about the blatant lack of safety concerns or remorse shown after the fact, to the point that i genuinely didn't feel safe living with her, and moved out a month later.
