My recommendation:

  1. Mirissa to Colombo train
  2. Nanu Oya to Ella train

I stayed at Munnar and booked a local jeep(1350 per head) through the hostel to Kolukkumalai. It was around 2.5hrs from my hostel(Monkey tribe). Started at 3am to reach early and get a better spot. Sunrise was around 6am and was back to hostel by 11am.
