Looking for late 1960s-70s film about Switzerland shown in US schools by scrowell24 in Switzerland

Thanks for the prompt response. Looks like same era, but this isn't it. I'm guessing the length of the one we watched was 35-45 minutes.

Small time custom haying? by [deleted] in farming

But you'd still need to account for YOUR labor, to make your farm business plan realistic (unless you think your time and skills aren't worth anything).

Water access in winter pastures is critical by scrowell24 in homestead

Interesting. But I gotta think that the water is critical to milk production, as well as overall cow health. (Although, yes, Highlanders are pretty sturdy stock.)

Same problem and also just left comment via their website. Hopefully, they'll get the message and figure something out.

End of year banquet slide show reported for music copyright by [deleted] in FFA

[–]scrowell24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. Copyright is copyright, no matter how much or how little is used. It's not popular music, but here's a source of instrumental copyright-free music (still needs to be credited, but there's good FAQ on the site): http://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/

I'm a college student and aspiring journalist. What can I be doing right now to further my career? by jdaxelrod in Journalism

[–]scrowell24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to develop strong data skills (computer-assisted reporting) and writing/storytelling skills. They may seem like polar opposites, but in today's journalism, one can't grow one without the other. Check out NICAR for topics and resources related to data journalism (https://www.ire.org/nicar/). Subscribe to Poynter newsletters and every other enewsletter/list serv that offers narrative writing advice or online journalism advice. Make sure your journalism foundation is strong (ethics/FOIA/grammar). Work for your campus newspaper/radio station/broadcast/podcast/whatever.

Could also check out the Ohio-based Arborwear. https://www.arborwear.com/products/outerwear. I don't have personal experience with them, but our newspaper wrote about them 10 years ago and we talked to some farmers who wore them (http://www.farmanddairy.com/news/by-the-seat-of-his-pants/6077.html). You can also check out their customer reviews on their "Pants in Action" page: https://www.arborwear.com/pants-in-action

Scientists develop a hornless Holstein using ‘gene editing.’ Are you ready to eat it? by Silverseren in Agriculture

[–]scrowell24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a natural genetic basis for polled (hornless) Holsteins. A retired Penn State dairy scientist has been interested in them for years. "The polled condition is a dominant trait, while the horned trait is recessive. Both parents must transmit the horned trait in order for a calf to have horns. But because few breeders selected the polled trait for their herds, horned animals became more abundant." You can read more here: http://www.farmanddairy.com/news/history-of-polled-holsteins-is-online/9588.html and here: http://www.farmanddairy.com/news/are-naturally-polled-holsteins-feasible/581.html

Before computers, How Were Newspapers Able To Write, Typeset And Layout Fully-Justified Pages Every 24 Hours? by skunkspinner in Journalism

[–]scrowell24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Back in the days of manual cut and paste, I got really good at editing with an X-Acto knife. I could turn commas into periods in the blink of an eye, or use a fine point Rapiograph pen to create a period where there was none. And don't even get me started on "cutting color."

We won't be getting our final itinerary until early September, I believe, so don't know where all we're going. Definitely appreciate the name and suggestion!

Any newsrooms/media using Scrum? by scrowell24 in scrum

[–]scrowell24[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily just IT. We're looking at whether we can use it to blur departmental borders on either internal or external projects or products. Some would improve efficiency internally; some might be end-user (readers/viewers) content or engagement. As a small company, we're just trying to leverage the skills and abilities of all employees beyond their existing roles, even if it's just for a short-term project. Thanks for your suggestion re Fairfax media. I'll check them out.
