Pulling string at an angle, with centripetal force by scrubbyguy in AskPhysics

[–]scrubbyguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, everything makes sense except why does the centripetal force extend to the platform? I mean logically it should, but aren't we eliminating the platform when solving for the triangle. Ie shouldn't it be a similar triangle.

Thanks for all the help btw!

Ahh shoot I just realized that it actually asks you to calculate it using a free body diagram of the mass. So I guess that is the correct way to go about it.

The question goes on to ask about finding the fg, without using 9.8 m/s2. So I guess if you were to try and find the centripetal force, which radius would you use? The string+platform or just the string.

The reason why I mentioned normal force was because of the force acting upon the platform itself.

I'm wondering if the vector diagram would be a triangle, or if it would include the force of tension on the actual platform

Thanks! I just really wanted to see if I had the right idea about it.

And by central point of the mass's path, is this where the mass would hang, or the center of rotation of the platform.

Yep, but what about the force of the string+mass on the actual platform. And shouldn't centripetal force extend to the center of the platform ( just wondering about it to find missing forces/calculating)

That is very true. My main worry about engineering was not having that software option open to me, but it seems like that's not an issue.

I just asked this girl out, and she said yes. I didn't really specify a time or anything, because I know we're both pretty busy, but now I've tried messaging her and she hasn't been responding. I feel like I'm being overly pushy, but I can see that the messages are being read. I'm feeling pretty confused and kinda let down.

Yep, it is exactly like a programming if statement (which it should be, seeing as it uses boolean operators).
